A huge victory has been won for America's forests, as a federal judge in California reinstated nearly all of the Clinton-era Roadless Rule. The Bush Administration had repealed the plan that protects 58.5 million acres of national forest.

Since our invasion of Iraq acts of terrorism around the world have increased by over 100%. No number of troops can solve this problem.

But Senator Joesph Biden, along with Leslie Gelb, President Emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, have proposed a five-point plan that would bring peace to region without deploying more U.S. troops.

The only way to hold Iraq together and create the conditions that allow our armed forces to responsibly withdraw is to give Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds incentives to pursue their interests peacefully and to forge a sustainable political settlement. To accomplish this, President Bush should endorse the Biden-Gelb five-point plan, which would:
  1. Maintain a unified Iraq by decentralizing it in to regions. A central government would be left in charge of common interests.
  2. Guarantee Sunnis a proportionate share of oil revenue so that each group has an incentive to maximize oil production, making oil the glue that binds the country together.
  3. Create a massive jobs program while increasing reconstruction aid -- especially from the oil-rich Gulf states -- but tying it to the protection of minority rights.
  4. Hold an international conference that would produce a regional nonaggression pact and create a Contact Group to enforce regional commitments.
  5. Begin the phased redeployment of U.S. forces and withdraw most of them by the end of 2007.
This plan is consistent with Iraq's constitution and has been endorsed by many experts on Iraq. It will help rebuild the country while bringing our troops home.

TELL PRESIDENT BUSH TO SUPPORT SENATOR BIDEN'S FIVE-POINT PLAN FOR PEACE, NOT THE DEPLOYMENT OF MORE TROOPS TO IRAQ!

UPDATE: The tragedy in Darfur has reached a critical moment. Already millions of Darfuris - driven from their homes - are completely dependent on international aid for food, medicine and shelter. But due to escalating violence, much of that aid can no longer reach those who need it most.

A UN peacekeeping force remains the only hope to bring peace to the region.

But the peacekeeping force - already authorized by the UN Security Council - might never make it to Darfur if the Sudanese government doesn’t agree to let it in. That's why it's so important that our world leaders ramp up the pressure and demand that the peacekeepers are admitted.

Now is the time to remind President Bush and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that the international community is watching, and that we refuse to let the atrocities in Darfur continue.

Rainforests Burning
In what is becoming an annual event, fires are sweeping through the tropical rainforests of Indonesia and Brazil. The burning of the rainforests not only threaten biodiversity in the affected areas but, by contributing towards climate change, they also put the entire planet at risk.

kids Our health insurance system is broken and our children are paying the price. Today, over nine million children go without the insurance they need, even though nearly two-thirds of all uninsured children live with at least one working parent.

Our children's health is our first priority, yet many of us see our health care bills spiraling out of control. Since 1988, health premiums have risen 600 percent and health care benefits have been slashed. As a result, over two million children lost their employer-based coverage between 2000 and 2003.

It shouldn't have to be this way. This fall, Parents' Action will send a message to our leaders that parents across the country are demanding quality and affordable health care for all children.

Add your name to the list. Tell Congress you care about the health of our nation's children and you're not going to take "No" for an answer.

The White House is calling on Congress to pass legislation that undermines the baseline protections for prisoners guaranteed by the Geneva Conventions - and undermines our nation's values.

Although not as visually shocking as the Abu Ghraib prison photos from Iraq, President Bush's speech last Wednesday tells the same horrifying story: The Bush administration is again fighting for the right to abuse detainees in U.S. custody.

If the White House succeeds, we will be inviting other nations to abuse our own troops, now and in future wars. The administration is willing to risk the lives of our soldiers - and further tarnish our reputation - so that it can engage in cruel and inhuman treatment.

TELL CONGRESS TO REJECT THE PRESIDENT'S MISGUIDED PROPOSAL ON THE TREATMENT OF DETAINEES IN U.S. CUSTODY - SIGN THIS PETITION TODAY!
