I had my phone meeting with Senator Wangaard at around 2:30 this afternoon.  I was pleasantly surprised that he is so willing to talk to constituents.

Anyway, as April's Law is reading right now, there are a couple of things that he doesn't agree with, such as defining the adult vs. the minor child, and currently in Wisconsin, anyone under 17 is NOT allowed to consent to sex, and he doesn't want the 16 year old girlfriend and 17 year old boyfriend, who are high school sweethearts, probably going to marry some day, ending up being arrested.  So I asked if in the discussion part of it, if he could possibly add the 4 year clause, because April's Law is NOT meant to cover consenting young couples because there is NO intent of the older one to kidnap, rape, traumatize, and worse to the younger partner.  April's Law is to push against those who are actual child predators.

Senator Wangaard also feels that in general, the judges do hand out the maximum sentences, and wants to ensure that criminals don't get let out early, just to save a buck and jeopardize the public.  I agree about the early release.  On the other hand, I don't feel that there is much uniformity in how child perpetrators get punished.

If at all possible, please call or write him, in support of April's Law, that you'd like to see it put forth as a law, to protect our children.  If you don't know what to say, here is a sample of what you may say or write to him.

Dear Senator Wangaard,

My name is _________.  *I am constituent, and would like to urge you to support April's Law Wisconsin.*  Please make what ever amendments and exclusions fit to make it a good bill to protect our children here in Wisconsin.

Thank you for your concern for our children, and for working so hard to make our community a better place for all citizens, including our most helpless.

Your Name.

*if you are NOT a constituent yet support it, - say - *I am not a constituent, but I have (grandchildren/nieces/nephews) who are constituents, and I'd like to urge you to support April's Law Wisconsin in their honor.*

Right now, he's waiting to see what comes out of Rep. Cory Mason's office, and I would really like this to be a non-partisan issue.  If you could take a couple minutes, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you in advance!  Here is the contact info for Wisconsin State Senator Van Wangaard:
