Ethiopian shepherd girl Female genital cutting (FGC), also called female circumcision, has affected more than 135 million women and girls worldwide. The cutting usually takes place between the ages of 4 and 12 and can cause serious complications including severe bleeding, infection, long-term difficulties with intercourse and childbirth, and even death.

Working with community leaders, CARE has already made progress in ending female genital cutting. Now we need the help of people like you.

By signing this petition today, you'll be raising awareness and taking a stand to stop the painful practice of female genital cutting. Your name will be added to a list that will demonstrate to key decision makers and change agents just how strong the opposition against FGC is.

We must do all we can to save these girls from a lifetime of pain and suffering. Start by taking a stand against FGC. Sign today.

Impending Medicare cuts threaten to limit women's access to lifesaving screenings and treatment at the very point in their lives when they are at the greatest risk of developing breast cancer.

If the cuts occur, many physicians – from oncologists to pathologists and from radiologists to surgeons – will be forced to cut back on their services for our aging population. This is particularly troubling because 42 percent of all patients diagnosed with breast cancer are age 65 or older.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There's no better way to celebrate than to raise your voice and make a difference. Help ensure quality health care for women of all ages: send a message to your representatives in Congress and ask them to repeal the Medicare reimbursement cuts.

Brutal conditions, crippling injuries, inhumane treatment - this is what workers face this every day at Smithfield processing plants. Cited by Human Rights Watch, the National Labor Relations Board, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for creating an environment of intimidation and fear, Smithfield has strenuously resisted any attempts by their workers to organize a union.

The National Labor Relations Board has found that your company to routinely uses racial epithets, assault, threats of deportation, and unlawful firings to intimidate workers. This is outrageous and must stop.

Join with workers and community supports across the country to demand fair labor practices!

The tragedy in Darfur has reached a critical moment. Already millions of Darfuris - driven from their homes - are completely dependent on international aid for food, medicine and shelter. But due to escalating violence, much of that aid can no longer reach those who need it most.

A UN peacekeeping force remains the only hope to bring peace to the region.

But the peacekeeping force - already authorised by the UN Security Council - might never make it to Darfur if the Sudanese government doesn’t agree to let it in. That's why it's so important that our world leaders ramp up the pressure and demand that the peacekeepers are admitted.

Now is the time to remind Prime Minister Tony Blair that Britain are watching, and that we refuse to let the atrocities in Darfur continue.

Vote Sign In the 2000 and 2004 general elections, voters in Florida, Ohio and other states were caught up in electoral debacles that led to major problems on Election Day and voter distrust of our election system today.

And despite all the talk and promises of voting reform and improvements, major election issues remain unaddressed, and voters continue to question the integrity of our elections.

The latest problem is the electronic voting machines which were supposed to be part of the solution. These machines leave NO paper record of our votes! They provide no permanent documentation that could prove that votes are being counted accurately. In the world's greatest democracy - a democracy that in recent years has been plagued by faulty elections that undermine voter trust - this is just unacceptable.

Take action! Join Senator Evan Bayh and call on Governor Bush and Governor Taft to lead the way for verified voting in the critical states of Florida and Ohio!

Nashville Tennessee's Vanderbilt University Research Department has long been identified as one of the worse perpetrators of animal abuse in the United States.  Most of their heinous crimes against animals, particularly primates, have been uncontested and uncontrolled by the USDA, given the fame and prestige of the university.

Recently, university technician Jeffrey Schall's horrific experimentation on fully-awake primates moved fellow technicians and veteranian
Maggie Tighe to protest and blow the whistle on this employee.

Jeffrey Schall's federally funded experiments use approximately $1.5 million taxpayer dollars per year to maintain his "Frankensteinish" activities.  He is in direct non-compliance with federal and university regulations regarding humane animal care.

We are petitioning for a full-scale investigation into this matter and requesting that not only should Mr. Schall be FIRED but also to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

If you agree that a full investigation should be undertaken, please sign the petition.  If you would like to take more action, please notify your legislators, Vanderbilt University and check out the many animal abuse sites on the web for more graphic information.

This year, Congress is on track to spend the least amount of time in session of any Congress since 1948. So far, the House of Representatives has scheduled a mere 88 days in session.

What are Members of Congress doing, if not their jobs? Here's a not-so-outlandish guess: When not doing the people's business, Congressmen and Senators are spending many of their hours meeting with lobbyists and raising money.

Unfortunately, we don't know, because lawmakers aren't required to clock in or post timesheets. And yet they work for us, to the tune of $162,500 a year, plus generous pensions and health plans. Most of the rest of us punch a clock, and we think they should, too.

Enter the Punch Clock Campaign of the Sunlight Network.

We are asking Congress and FEC-qualified candidates to commit to putting their daily schedule on the internet, within 24 hours after the end of each day. That way we'll be able to check in with them, and they'll strengthen their relationship with us.

Ready to get your elected representatives on the clock? Take the first step and sign the petition!

Starting September 22nd, tens of thousands of seniors and disabled will find their Medicare prescription drug coverage has temporarily run out--leaving many to go without needed medicines.

Why? Congress created a "donut hole" where people are left with no help after Medicare spends a certain amount on their medicines. Those who fall into this coverage hole will have to pay nearly $3,000 out of their pockets before coverage kicks in again.

But if Congress negotiated lower drug prices, this coverage hole could be eliminated. The Department of Veterans Affairs negotiates drug prices and gets savings of up to 46%, Medicare can do the same!

The deadline is Sept. 29th: Don't let Congress end their legislative session without giving seniors and taxpayers a better deal! Tell Congress to fix Medicare Part D, so the health of seniors and taxpayers--not the profits of drug companies, comes first!
