VICTORY!! NO PERMANENT BASES AMENDMENT PASSES BOTH HOUSES!!

Your efforts paid off. The Senate, like the House, passed an amendment to the supplemental spending bill banning the use of any of its funding for the construction of permanent bases in Iraq. Will the amendment survive a Republican-run conference committee? We'll be watching.
So give yourselves a pat on the back, and get ready for the next fight! Here it is:

TELL CONGRESS TO TELL BUSH AND CHENEY NOT TO ATTACK IRAN

George Bush is considering attacking Iran, including using nuclear bombs to do so. Such an attack would be illegal and disastrous. Congress can prevent it, but only if Congres asserts its Constitutional right to decide whether or not the United States goes to war. Congressman Peter DeFazio's H. Con. Res. 391 expresses "the sense of Congress that the President should not initiate military action against Iran with respect to its nuclear program without first obtaining authorization from Congress." This bill is rapidly picking up cosponsors, but needs more. Ask your Congress Member to sign on today. Ask your Senators to take the same step in the Senate.

There are mothers suffering:
 Ironton, Missouri

              There are mothers suffering...

We cry the tears for those
               lives lost by lies
               that live in swords
               and bombs...

               The sons and daughters
               we remember
               as we do
               their families
               and friends.

               We stand in vigil
               for their deaths
               and weep for them--our

               Sadness seeps
               through
               the stance
               for peace that
               we all try to keep.

               Our children
               Have earned our weeping,
               and so we honor them
though they might be better served
with our anger at their keeping
               by those without honor
those with no regard for children.

               They deserve our sorrow
               they need our rage more.

Take Action Now!

TELL CONGESS YOU CARE ABOUT THE HUMAN COST OF WAR

As Americans, we are rightly concerned about the ongoing violence in Iraq and now, again, in Afghanistan, including the safety of our troops. Congress must also hear that we care about the countless civilians caught in the crossfire. The victims of these wars need and deserve our help to rebuild their lives.

A smart, compassionate response to the tens of thousands of families suffering in Iraq includes the support of the Iraq Community Action Program (ICAP). This humanitarian aid from the U.S. ensures that Iraqis harmed by the conflict receive the help they need. Widows receive small business loans and business training; children and orphans receive support; bombed homes are restored. Plus, this program rebuilds communities and civil society with the help of Iraqis themselves - creating a more stable future for their country

Use the template below to write to your representatives to let them know that you care about the human cost of war and that you feel strongly that humanitarian programs in Iraq should be fully funded.

Congress: Only You Can Authorize War on Iran

(Contributed by Working Assets)

Recent news reports have indicated that the Bush Administration is planning offensive military operations against Iran, possibly including nuclear weapons, and that these plans are not just "contingencies." Intelligence officials quoted by renowned investigative reporter Seymour Hersh describe this planning as "enormous," "hectic" and "operational."

Yet our constitution says quite clearly in Article One, Section Eight, that only Congress has the power to declare war. Despite President Bush's expansive views of his own powers, a unilateral bombing attack on another country is in fact an overt act of war.

Make no mistake about it -- the President of Iran and the mullahs who back him are dangerous, anti-semitic theocrats. However, the consensus of American intelligence agencies is that they are at least ten years away, if not more, from developing their first atomic weapon. There is still ample time to engage diplomatically and solve this problem through international agencies such as the United Nations Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The neoconservatives' view that American bombing attacks will cause the Iranian people to rise up and overthrow their government can most charitably be described as delusional.

Representative DeFazio of Oregon has introduced a resolution to express the sense of Congress that the President cannot initiate military action against Iran without congressional authorization. He is seeking additional support among other House members for the resolution as well.

Call to action

Urge your Representative to co-sign Rep. DeFazio's "sense of Congress" resolution forbidding military action against Iran without Congressional authorization.

This week we have seen escalating brutality in Iraq claiming the lives of 1,300 people, a poll exposing the desire of 72% of the U.S. soldiers to leave Iraq, and George Bush’s approval ratings plunging to the lowest levels of his presidency. His lies have caused the deaths and destruction of far too many lives. We must act now. We must join together across the borders to end this madness.

Next week, in celebration of International Women's Day, a courageous group of Iraqi women will converge in Washington DC to hold George Bush and Congress accountable for the chaos, the killing, the violence that is engulfing their nation. They represent Shias, Sunnis and Kurds, religious and secular women. They are united in their horror at the killings, their outrage at the Bush administration and U.S. elected officials, and their determination to stop the violence.

We owe it to them to stand with them in solidarity. You can do that by signing the Urgent Call for Peace, circulating it, and participating in an anti-war action on International Women's Day. Click here to find an event in your community. And if you don't see one, pull something together--fast. It can be as simple as downloading a copy of our Urgent Call for Peace, representing the signatures of tens of thousands of women worldwide, and taking it to your Embassy or congressperson (click here to download).

One of our delegates told us that in Baghdad these days, there are dead bodies on the streets and pools of blood on the sidewalks, that parents are keeping their children locked inside their homes. Fear is everywhere.

As we say in our call, "This is not the world we want for ourselves or our children. With fire in our bellies and love in our hearts, we women are rising up - across borders - to unite and demand an end to the bloodshed and the destruction."

Join us,
Dana, Farida, Gael, Jodie, Medea, Nancy, Rae & Tiffany
