An Update on José, Care2 Sponsored Child

Greetings! Care2 members do a lot of amazing things every day. One of them is clicking the mouse to support important causes. Daily clicks on the Care2 Click to Donate pages can do amazing things! Like saving the rainforest, protecting our oceans and providing much needed sponsorship to children in need. We’ve recently received an update about one of the children Care2 members sponsor – Jos from the Dominican Republic. Your clicks have been sponsoring Jos for almost 8 years!

Update from Jos

Hello! Dear Sponsors: I write to greet you and tell you my family and I are very close and we go to church. I am in the 9th grade at school and my favorite subjects are: grammar, biology, social studies and arts. After ending secondary school, I’d like to become a singer. I like riding on bikes, going to the beach, sharing with friends and so on. Here, we celebrated our Carnival Festival and I am enjoying. The wagons have a very nice colors. I like it very much and my mates and I enjoy it very much. Now I say bye with affection and love. Thank you for your support given to me.

I’m your sponsored child,

Information from Children International

Jos turned 15 years old on his last birthday, which was in January. The last time he was measured and weighed, he had grown to 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed about 110 pounds.

School / Activities

Jos attends school. According to Jos, his favorite subjects are art and grammar.

Home Life

Jos lives with his parents in a community where most families survive on incomes that average about $131 a month. Frankly because the unemployment rate is high, many parents struggle to find a steady job. When they do find consistent work, most adults are daily workers, maids and drivers.

Jos’s father, Fausto, is a daily worker. His mother, Marcelina, is a homemaker. While the average household income varies, they usually average about $186 a month.

The family lives in a house, which is constructed of wood walls, concrete flooring and a corrugated metal roof. It has a dining room, two bedrooms and a kitchen. Jos sleeps on a bed. Cooking facilities consist of a gas stove. Electricity is available, and the sanitary facility is a latrine. The family is fortunate to have running water.

There are many challenges facing impoverished families in the Dominican Republic. In poor communities, there is an urgency to safeguard children and youth from the drugs, gang violence and crime that are common. We do our best to encourage young people to participate in positive activities and attend school so they can escape the grips of poverty.

Without an education, parents have a difficult time finding work and take on whatever jobs they can find. Youth feel pressured to leave school and work to improve their families’ well being. Sadly, it is still a struggle to cover their basic needs.

Jos is fortunate to have the support of Children International and the many benefits of sponsorship that are helping him improve his life, for example

  • Educational support, such as school supplies and learning materials
  • Basic health care and medicine
  • New clothes and sturdy schools

Thank you to all of the Care2 members that visit and click daily for children like Jos.
