During our last installment of Care2 Members in the News, we learned about petitions to stop blackface at the World Cup, protect animal rights, and end GMO use at Panera. Read on to see what Care2 petitions were featured in local and national media in July!

Nearly 3,000 Fight for Gator Joe’s Job

In South Carolina, Joe Maffo is somewhat of a local celebrity for being the alligator removal man. But when “Gator Joe” refused to euthanize a gator that wasn’t harmful, he lost his contract with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

That’s when a Care2 petition cropped up demanding Joe be reinstated. It spread like wildfire in the local community, gathering 2,725 signatures, including 1,496 from South Carolina residents alone.

The state says Maffo broke protocol May 31 when he relocated a 12-foot-long, 1,000-pound, 50-year-old alligator from Hilton Head Island instead of killing it. The state cancelled its contract with Maffo’s company, Critter Management, for failing to euthanize the animal, which many locals affectionately call “Big Al.” But those who signed the petition say Joe was just showing empathy, and that he did the right thing.

The Care2 petition supporting Gator Joe gained plenty of attention in local press, including:

More than 27,000 Rally to Save Market Basket

Residents in Massachusetts and beyond were heartbroken when they discovered Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted as CEO of Market Basket, a beloved grocery chain. Massachusetts resident Mary Giacobbe knew she had to do something to gather support for the CEO — so she started a Care2 petition.

“[Arthur T.] is an example [of] one who gives much back to the community in these hard times,” she writes on her Care2 petition. [He] has accommodated the elderly, disabled, lower income shoppers, [and created] jobs for youth.”

As thousands of protestors rallied on the ground, Mary’s Care2 petition quickly gained steam online, racking up more than 27,087 signatures. The petition was also featured in over 20 news stories, including:

Over 73,400 Protest a Zoo in a Mall

At Merle Hay Mall, visitors can pay a fee any day of the week to see wolves, a cougar, and even a skunk kept inside. But animal rights activists like Rita Mason think keeping animals locked up inside small enclosures is cruel. That’s why Rita started a Care2 petition demanding the exhibit be removed.

The exhibit is called The Academy of Wildlife Education, but activists say the exhibit is far from educational — it’s downright abusive.

“We feel it is cruel to house bears, wolves, large cats inside the mall without sun, fresh air, or ever having the ability to run or roam for three years,” the Care2 petition reads.

The petition and zoo were the subject of  a lengthy feature in the Des Moines Register, which you can check out here. It was also featured on ABC 5 News. You can do your part to help these animals roam free by signing Rita’s petition!

The Demoulas story was local to me and a very big deal for all of us in my area. We're so happy for the happy ending.
