Here at Care2, our mission is to help activists around the world make a difference. Whether it’s by starting a petition, signing and sharing an action, reading up on the latest news and healthy living tips, or connecting with non-profits, Care2 has all sorts of ways to help you take real action on issues you care about. Luckily, the Care2 team cares about lots of those issues too.
You may read our e-mails, but have you ever wondered about the folks behind the photos at the bottom of our Action Alerts? Here are some faces you might recognize, along with some facts about us that you probably won’t!
Natasha N. joined Care2 in May 2007, with a background in field organizing and grassroots organization from 18 years of volunteer and work experience in the human rights movement. Before she came to Care2, she directed Amnesty International USA’s Urgent Action program (emergency response to rights violations such as torture, disappearances, extrajudicial executions, death threats, and the death penalty) and coordinated Amnesty International’s global rapid response arm, a 24/7 network of human rights ninjas around the world. She also has a background in math and philosophy, particularly concerning feminist ethics and rights theory. At Care2, she has worked with the Pew Environment Group, Defenders of Wildlife, Consumers Union and the Union of Concerned Scientists. She is the mother of an adorable toddler.
Ellen B. joined Care2 in 2011 after working as an organizer with the Ohio Democratic Party. She studied Creative Writing and East Asian Studies at Oberlin College, has been a passionate progressive activist longer than she’s been able to walk, and will talk for hours about her love of the Midwest if given half a chance. She has a particular interest in women’s rights and LGBT activism, as well as a love of international relations inspired by her time living abroad in Japan. In her free time she reads an excessive amount, knits tiny hats for her pet gecko, and practices her language skills by watching Japanese soap operas. As an Online Campaigner at Care2, she is proud to help get out the word and grow support for important progressive issues and non-profit organizations, which include the Center for Biological Diversity, ONE, and the League of Women Voters.
Sharanya P. came to Care2 after gaining more than 10 years of strategic campaigning and policy experience from working with animal welfare and environmental nonprofits in India and the U.S. She has been passionately committed to progressive causes since childhood. Originally from Chennai, India, Sharanya is a lifelong vegetarian and longtime vegan who endeavors to make the world a better place for all its inhabitants. At Care2, some of her clients include the ASPCA, National Parks Conservation Association, Humane Society International, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the National Wildlife Federation.
Kara F. joined Care2 after attending the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she studied Modern Literature, reported for the student-run newspaper, City on a Hill Press, and gained experience at a local book publishing and distribution company. When she isn’t interning at Care2, she works with recent foster care graduates, helping them with everyday tasks while they transition into an independent and self-sufficient lifestyle. At Care2, she assists with petition-writing, petition promotion, and blog-writing about the day-to-day issues and top news stories impacting citizens.
Colleen H. is an Online Campaigner with Care2 and a recent transplant to San Francisco from the East Coast. She’s passionate about immigration reform, a living wage for all, and reproductive rights among other things. Before joining Care2, she worked as a legal advocate for domestic violence survivors and helped build and run the website GenderAcrossBorders.com, a global voice for gender justice. In her free time, you can find her reading blogs, newspapers, tweets, novels and any other version of the written word. Colleen is a graduate of Georgetown University where she focused her studies on Spanish, studying in both Spain and Ecuador, and Women’s Studies, and was a member of the Living Wage Coalition. At Care2, her campaigns include Planned Parenthood, United Farm Workers and Greenpeace.
Kathleen J. came to Care2 after graduating from Cornell University, where she was an advisory board member of the Women’s Resource Center, gave advice to students struggling with their sexualities through the faQ-online program, and directed the 2011 production of The Vagina Monologues. She also taught caving and rock climbing classes through Cornell Outdoor Education. A longtime vegan, her passions include feminism, LGBT advocacy, and animal welfare. In her spare time, she also enjoys walking up San Francisco’s big hills, taking improv classes, and writing poetry. As Care2′s Activism Coordinator, she connects activists and members to issues they care about by assisting with petition creation and promotion.
Claire K. created her first petition in the second grade asking President Clinton to stop a hospital from paving over milkweed (save the monarch butterflies!). A native Illin-Iowa vegetarian toad kisser, Claire found a home out east at Smith College before migrating west to Care2. As a women’s college student, she worked at museums, took part in a (trans-friendly!) production of Cabaret, and led campus conversations after receiving extensive mental health, race, class, and GLBTQA training. She occasionally slips away to support local apiaries and dabble in voice acting. Claire currently plays vital roles in several different areas of Care2 as an intern.
Emily L. started at Care2 in 2007 after a short stint as a journalist in California. Her passion for environmental issues stole her away for a year of AmeriCorps in environmental education in 2010. When she returned, she resumed her work with Sierra Club, NRDC, Forest Ethics, Greenpeace and many other wonderful organizations as a one-woman Portland, OR office. In her free time she plays guitar, violin and sings in two bands, reads about radical feminism, and plays with her two adorable cats.
Kayla C. is a passionate animal activist and vegan who studied art at the University of California, Santa Barbara. A lifelong lover of animals and the outdoors, she likes running near the vineyards of Central California (where she lives), hiking, surfing, making vegan mac and cheese, and spoiling her rescued rabbits and beagles. She’s enjoyed working with clients like Earthjustice, the National Audubon Society, the Antarctic Ocean Alliance and more.
Emily V. was a journalist by training before she decided she would rather be the one changing the world than the one writing about it. She started her advocacy career canvassing the Chicagoland area to gain support for curbing greenhouse gas emissions in Illinois and funding public transit. After graduating from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, she moved to California and started emailing Care2 members to take action on important issues. She’s also a current master’s student at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, learning more ways to affect change. When she’s not getting fired up about women’s rights and environmental sustainability, you can find her running on the few flat surfaces in the Bay Area or cheering on all the mediocre sports teams from her hometown, Washington, D.C.
We’re all so grateful to be working with Care2 and with you to help make the world a better place. But remember, you can take action, too! If you’d like to start a petition of your own, why not try out our petition creation tool? And if you ever need any help, have any suggestions for improvement, or just want to say hi, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We love hearing from you.
Thanks, as always, for making a difference.
