20 Animals You Didn’t Know Are Going Extinct

  • 20 of 20

20. Mockingbirds

They may annoy you by mimicking a car alarm early in the morning, but mockingbirds are amazing creatures. Unfortunately, at least one species, the San Cristobal Mockingbird, endemic to the island of San Cristóbal in the central Galápagos islands, is endangered. There are only around 5,300 mature individuals left.

Nothing on Earth exists without a reason, without a purpose. Mother Nature is excellent at getting rid of things that don’t fill a function and thus what remains here is actually important — whether or not humans recognize that importance. Some species are on their way out through natural selection, but others (possibly even most?) are being forced out by factors brought on by we humans. Whether or not a species is beautiful, valuable to an economy, important to science or any other reason, it deserves recognition for its role in an ecosystem and effort put into conserving it in the wild. It’s not just the species making the news that need help — it’s also some that would surprise you.

I hate to nit-pick but your Buffalo picture is the African Buffalo not a Water Buffalo. The UK's biggest problem is invasive species: the American Grey Squirrel, Canada Goose, Mink and Signal Crayfish are major blights on our ecosystems. Unfortunately, there are too many bleeding hearts that would rather have the Red Squirrel, the Water Vole and the White-clawed Crayfish go extinct than have a mass eradication programme of these harmful non-native species - oh, and a spineless government that claims to be the greenest ever but the only green credentials they have are the rotting corpses of the animals they have slaughtered for no good reason.

Good synopsis, good info on the most critically endangered animals though these are (with the exception of rodents, birds and one spider) mostly examples of megafauna, of animals that can be observed through a telephoto lens from a distance. The majority of the some estimated 63,000 *species* going extinct annually do not come under this heading as most are plants, insects or other varieties of life just as much a part of the biosphere as a peacock or ground squirrel.
On a technical note I could not help noticing how much your "Water Buffalo" (Bubalus bubalis), resembled this much more massive but unrelated fellow, the African Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer)

They aren't all "going extinct"

1. - Stable as of 2008, Endangered
2a/b. Actually might be "going extinct"
3. Successful captive breeding, unlikely to go extinct

I could go into each, but I won't. Given that the UN Environment Programme reckons 150-200 species go extinct daily, the more interesting article would be what species that we recorded have gone extinct, not hte ones that are endangered but stable. Also zebras, horses, etc. aren't going extinct as a family, only individual niche species within that family/group.

sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad.......if humans don't wake up and start living with thoughts of the future then some day all life will be on this list.....

PS -- could we have had an intro page with a list of the 20 and then links to each page, took me way too long to load each page and read the whole thing, but I did....
