Last month, we outlined how Care2 members took a stand for a variety of issues and causes, including support for animal shelter volunteers, sound designers, and pets left in hot cars. As July rolls in, it’s become clear Care2 members haven’t given up momentum. Here are some top Care2 petitions that have circulated in the media in the past two weeks!
1. More Than 37,000 Demand FIFA Stop Allowing Blackface at the World Cup
The World Cup has been the center of international attention this summer, but a troubling display was spotted among some fans: blackface.
FIFA has strict rules against musical instruments, certain brands of headphones and even bottled water, but is allowing fans in blackface into the games. Al Jazeera reported that three fans at the France v. Switzerland game dressed in blackface in an apparent attempt to mock Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian and Caribbean religion. And during the Ghana v. Germany match, “at least a dozen” German fans showed up in blackface.
Blackface is incompatible with FIFA’s #SayNoToRacism campaign, which it says is an effort to “fight to eradicate racism and discrimination in football.”
The Care2 petition demanding FIFA not allow blackface at the games quickly gathered more than 37,000 signatures, and was featured in the following news outlets:

2. More than 28,000 Demand Ripley‘s Aquarium Remove “Touch Tanks”
Ruslan was appalled when he visited Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada in Toronto back in April. He couldn’t believe the aquarium’s “Touch Tanks” exhibit, which allows people to touch live animals like sharks and stingrays. He believes the exhibit causes stress on the animals, which are already removed from their natural environment. So what did he do? Rallied opponents via a Care2 petition.
“I think it is important for us to ensure that we move forward to create better living conditions for the generations to come,” he said. “This should include all animals.”
Ruslan’s petition quickly gained steam, and even landed him a live, on-air interview with CTV, Canada’s largest broadcast television network! Other media outlets that covered his petition include The Huffington Post and Digital Journal. You can add your name to Ruslan’s petition here!
3. Nearly 18,000 Ask Panera to Say No to GMOs
After Panera Bread announced in early June it would remove artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and preservatives from all its food products by 2016, healthy food advocates were pleased. But Diana Reeves, founder of GMO Free USA, wanted the chain to go further and say no to GMOs, too. She started a Care2 petition to rally support.
“We are very grateful that Panera has committed to removing artificial ingredients from their menu, but GMOs are also artificial and cannot occur in nature,” she said. “These plants are transgenically altered in the labs of chemical companies to be herbicide tolerant or produce their own pesticides. If Panera truly advocates for clean food and wants to positively impact the food system, GMOs should also be removed.”
All of these stories are a great testament to the power of online petitions created on Care2. Is there an issue or cause you care about? Create a petition today, and show the world what you would like to be changed.
