4 Ridiculous Things Republicans Are Saying About Immigration

Immigration remains a political lightning rod in the United States, and one that flares up even more during a presidential year. While immigration reform, the DREAM Act, pathways to citizenship and the rights of undocumented workers has long divided the two major political parties, Republicans have worked in the last two years to slightly soften their stance in an attempt to expand their typical voter pool and bring in more supporters of color.

But not all Republicans are ready to discuss immigration rationally and without jumping to xenophobic tropes. Here are four ridiculous things some conservatives are saying about immigration.

1) Undocumented immigrants are “rapists.”

Donald Trump is having a quite frightening surge as a potential GOP presidential candidate, a surge that says less about his own viability as a politician and more about the mindset of some of the Republican base. That surge may finally be declining a little as the former reality television star and real estate mogul stated during his presidential announcement that those crossing the border from Mexico are probably dangerous criminals. “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” he said, adding, “They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, their rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.”

Since then, Trump has been amazed by the backlash he’s felt. “I didn’t know it was going to be quite this severe,” he said, according to Talking Points Memo. “But I really knew it was going to be bad.”

2) No, they are worse than sharks.

Conservative pundit Ann Coulter managed to one up Trump when it came to hard core anti-immigration rhetoric, a feat that should have been unthinkable. Her quip? Undocumented immigrants kill more Americans than sharks. “During an interview on Fox News, Coulter argued that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s controversial assertion that immigrants were rapists had been vindicated because the suspect in a recent San Francisco killing was an undocumented immigrant who had been deported five times,” reports Raw Story. “‘You know, going into this weekend, the media was consumed with stories, Americans have to be on the lookout for ISIS attacks and terror attack expected, and oh, shark attacks,’ Coulter declared. ‘I will bet you by the end of the weekend, more Americans will have been killed by Mexicans than by ISIS or by sharks.’” She then tells Fox that there is no point trying to “win” the Latino vote, which is probably good news since the odds of that happening after that statement are very, very thin.

3) Undocumented immigrants have “bad intent.”

Even presidential candidate Rick Santorum got in on the act, saying that although he didn’t agree completely with Trump, it had to be admitted that an undocumented immigrant was breaking the law, so he or she must be at least a little bad.

“The vast majority of people coming legally from Mexico and other places are people who want to do the right thing,” Santorum told CBS, according to Crooks and Liars. “People who are coming illegally obviously are coming with a bad intent. Let’s just be honest, they coming with the clear intent of breaking the law…I don’t think we can sugarcoat that, but that doesn’t mean everyone who’s coming across is a rapist or a murderer or anything else. But they are breaking the law, and I think Donald points to a very important thing, which is, we have a serious problem of illegal immigration in this country that is undermining American workers.”

4) Those who support immigration reform just want “cheap labor.”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz knows immigrants, and is the the son of an immigrant, so he has no qualms saying Trump is right that immigration reform is wrong. Those who back it are obviously just interested in “cheap labor,” he claims.

“I salute Donald Trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration,” he said, according to Breitbart News. “The Washington cartel doesn’t want to address that. The Washington cartel doesn’t believe we need to secure the borders. The Washington cartel supports amnesty. I think amnesty is wrong and I salute Donald Trump for focusing on it…And here’s the sad truth, a lot of Republicans of the Washington cartel, they’re all for amnesty, too. Because from the perspective of the Chamber of Commerce and Wall Street, it’s cheap labor.”

So says a senator who campaigned against raising the minimum wage.

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAH David Please stop. Fines or not illegals are being hired and the employers simply go to court and say "How am I supposed to know?? I didn't have time to check every person that hires on here. Pretending illegals aren't being RECRUITED and HIRED by business means your being willfully unobservant.

Yes its POSSIBLE the border will get closed for MILITARY reasons but the Business Lobbies will fight it tooth and nail. Please stop trying to scare me with isis. I have much more to fear from my neighborhood drunk than I do ANY terrorist. I have much more to fear on my drive to work today than ANY terrorist. if you wish to live in fear thats your business. I haven't been afraid of much since looking into the abyss while in Nam.
I am also not afraid ot Iran. We have religious radicals right in our own country.

The Border is OPEN and POROUS because business WANTS it that way.

Unfortunately immigrants are being exploited big-time by American business, as far too many immigrants only have a basic elementary education, if even that. The exploitation also includes the human trafficking of women by the Cartels, pimps and coyotes; this is also a major problem. Sadly, the crux of the matter is that among all the good immigrants coming here to work and seeking the American dream, the foreign criminal element has also found a home. I guess you could say, they are kind of like wolves hiding among the sheep.

If you look at these politicians' statements objectively, without any political bias, you will find the last three statements to be generally true. Sharks rarely kill any Americans in any given period. The US is not currently directly engage in the fight against ISIS, so there should be zero casualties (although there might be some from covert actions). Thus, the probability of illegal immigrants killing Americans is indeed higher. And you can make similar arguments about the truth of Santorum's and Cruz's statements.

David there is only one reason the border is OPEN. BUSINESS wants it open and lobbies to KEEP it open. If you want to rebuke someone rebuke the CAUSE!!! BUSINESS!!! You can keep quoting shit from bribery or whoever
the ROOT cause of this problem is business recruits people up here for cheap labor.

The problem is simple. Lock the border. BUT you CANT lock it if the DEMAND is there. They will simply find another way to get the illegals up here. Business does NOT want the border closed.

I'm surprised no one brought up Fransisco and their Brain Dead Liberal Mayor and Supervisors who REFUSE to obey Federal Rules and Let out the Illegal Felon with 7 counts, ICE asked to let them know if he was going to be released, So he went out and shot the girl on the pier
