Since January 2011, McDonald’s in Hong Kong has been offering wedding receptions. According to the web page for the McDonald’s Wedding Party Warm and Sweet Wedding Package, couples can enjoy a “truly extraordinary wedding experience” for HK$9,999 (around US$1,287) that includes:
Brides can even rent or buy a white balloon or red balloon wedding dress.
According to an article in Time, McDonald’s doesn’t have the same stigma (mass production, obesity) that it does in the United States and other countries. People in Hong Kong are less critical of “big business” and are increasingly interested in affordability and informality. With traditional Hong Kong weddings starting at about US$38,000, some young couples are flocking towards these McWeddings to have a less expensive, more fun and more informal wedding experience.
While the extravagance of the Royal Wedding has been criticized given the tough economic times, a budget McDonald’s wedding could come under criticism for a whole host of other reasons, from being tacky to unethical. For those concerned about their budget as well as the environment and social justice, perhaps some of these green wedding tips would be a better way to go.
