Loading...AIDS Activists Protest Lack of Condoms In Pornography
Should porn actors be required to wear condoms? This seems like a logical and even necessary step for the health and safety of the industry’s actors, but it still isn’t surprising that most mainstream porn films don’t depict the use of condoms. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), however, has filed an official complaint in California against Larry Flynt, one of the world’s most successful and influential porn producers, because his actors are not required to use condoms.
The AHF said that it studied 100 of Flynt’s hardcore films, and that a condom was used in only one scene. “We see it as our duty to pursue action on the issue of safety in the workplace – in these instances, unprotected sex acts taking place in albeit non-traditional workplaces,” Michael Weinstein, the president of ACF, said in a statement. AHF members also demonstrated outside the Larry Flynt Productions building in Beverly Hills.
A spokesman for Flynt was blunt in his reply, saying that Flynt’s films give “what the consumer wants.” He added that Flynt complies with federal law, which stipulates that all porn actors be tested for HIV 30 days before the start of filming. None of the company’s actors, the spokesman added, has ever tested positive for HIV.
The problem is, it’s not just the public that doesn’t seem to want condom usage on porn sets; the actors themselves often feel that a rigorous battery of STD tests are enough to ensure their sexual safety. And although some former porn actors have come forward in favor of condom requirements, it’s telling that the voices of the actors are mostly missing from this latest article. Earlier this summer, porn actors protested against the possible strengthening of regulations on condom use. And people inside the industry have remarked that the industry is effective in policing itself.
“If Los Angeles County chooses to enforce mandatory condoms, what you’ll see is all adult production leave California. It will move to other places,” said Steve Hirsch, founder of Vivid Entertainment, when complaints were filed against 16 porn companies last August.
Clearly, this is a complicated issue. It does seem prudent to lower the chances that HIV or other STDs are spread in a tightly-knit community like the California porn industry. And there is, of course, the argument that modeling unsafe sex in porn encourages the practice at home, although this is not something that seems to be a large part of the ACF’s current campaign.
But at the same time, we shouldn’t neglect the voices of the people who are most affected by the restrictions, and they seem (with some exceptions) to strongly oppose them. And if Hirsch is right, these regulations wouldn’t make a difference – they would just encourage the porn industry to move elsewhere rather than changing its standards.

The 44 page complaint was filed in Federal Court on July 7th in Los Angeles. Warner Brothers' associated record labels are also named Plaintiffs (Electra, Atlantic Bad Boys and Asylum). In total 11 record labels are named. The pleadings allege that the Reality Kings are liable for the "deliberate and brazen exploitation of Plaintiff’s sound recordings and musical compositions in hundreds of extreme hardcore pornographic videos, without any consent or authorization from Plaintiffs.”

Logic dictates that of course, they should use condoms. However, if they want to play Russian roulette with their lives then so be it. What I have a bigger problem with is a group filing a lawsuit over something that is only indirectly related to them. (Kind of like these groups that try to file injunctions over taking someone off life support when they don't even know them......)

I suppose pausing the 'action' to put a condom on would be somewhat of a turn-off. But using the condom would be quite a good idea. So it's two-sided.
