Pilots Rescue Thousands of Animals from Kill Shelters
posted by: Beth Buczynski 95 days ago

Although we don't like to think about it very often, so-called animal shelters are actually the places where many would-be pets are euthanized every year.
Thousands of cats, dogs, rabbits and other domesticated animals are dropped off at shelters every year simply because no one wants them, their owners have been neglecting them, or because they were born in the wild and found later as strays.
If no adoptive homes can be found for them within certain short amount of time, the animals are often put to death.
Aside from adopting animals from local shelters when you or your child is looking for a new pet, there's not much that the average person can do to stop this sad practice.
But for a group of dedicated and creative pilots, it simply wasn't acceptable for this practice to continue any longer, and they decided to swoop in for an aerial rescue all their own.
Established in February 2008, the nonprofit group Pilots N Paws organizes volunteer pilots to rescue shelter animals from euthanasia by flying them to new homes. To date, Pilots N Paws estimates it has rescued more than 2,000 animals (abcnews.go.com).
This week the pilots annouced that they had set a lofty goal for the next few days: to find 5,000 dogs that were in danger of euthinasia, and airlift them to the medical facilities and new homes that would give them the TLC they need.
In an interview published on September 12, Pilots N Paws co-founder Debi Boies admitted that this was an agressive number, but that she was confident the talent of their volunteer pilots and the donations of concerned animal lovers would help get the job done.
The average cost for transport of an endangered dog is about $2,500 according to the volunteer pilots that work for Pilots N Paws.

People are just afraid and are now learning to do a breed rescue or even fostering for any cats or dogs. Bruno on Tuesday was taking to San Juan Animals Shelter and after the family said their goodbyes he was put down right away. When we found out Tuesday night we call and even went in person to find out that Bruno wasn't their.
What happen to poor Bruno. We all know that the Government is accustomed here in Puerto Rico is to just killed and Killed. They don't care if maybe Bruno family could have been looking for him, NO just killed. Poor Bruno died without even being love or having a family call his own. For a SIMPLE EYE MEDICATION
I beg to you all please don't permit this to continual and stand up for all the animals here in Puerto Rico. They don't care but we do care and tell our government that we want for those abuser to pay for their crime and don't get away from murder and for the law to be respectted. No more abuse and NO more animals thrown over bridges, run over by a car, killed directly at local shelter and for the cops to do their jobs.
Let Not forget and REMEMBER what happen 2 years ago October 11 when the whole world found out that 80 dogs and cats was threwn over the bridge and no justice was down like always. We need your help and say no more abuse and we want justice................
.Negotiation is over
With the Government,
Say NO to Puerto Rico
we want them to listen and help

You can help us change the life of millions of dogs here in Puerto Rico. Help me HELP then!
Here are some obligation and responsibility with the rights of our animals it goes forther to just treat them right, also is to accuse the abuser that that break the law 154. Our silent permits us to aloud more and more abuse to go on. We must stand up and speak for those who cannot speak land be the voice of the animals.
That same silent, yes that silent has cost lot of animals live all over the world. The cops have the right to take your statement and filled a case against who abuse to the animals. It doesn't mater if it is neglect, not feeding the animals or if you see someone leaving a animals in our streets. But we must to something and not stay silent. PLEASE.
Bruno was a Rottweiler dog who never had any luck like each of our babies (PETS). He was left alone to died of hunger, or kill by a car or kill for amusement. Last month Bruno was then rescue by a family who only could have kept him for a month. We all know how difficult it is to find a home for a dog especially for a 3 year old Rottweiler. People are just afraid and are now learning to do a breed rescue or even fostering for any cats or dogs. Bruno on Tuesday was taking to San Juan Animals Shelter and after the family

I love dogs and wouldn't choose to harm a single one, but is this serious? I work at human shelters and $2500 per dog would equal a decent housing option for one human for one whole year. Is this really a priority? If you answer, yes, I at least hope you are vegetarian!

As a person with a bit of experience managing a shelter, there is always a need for SOME euthanasia at a shelter that takes in the animals the public calls to have picked up. There are a few that are too injured to be saved or are too aggressive and can't be rehabilitated. You need to know that our shelter technicians hate the job and sometimes have to use some face tissue when they have to do this. Please donate also to your LOCAL shelter so the pilots don't have to fly so many animals to other places. And a big," Thank you", to the pilots.

Nicole C.,
Thanks for an inside look at shelters. It's so true that in certain areas of the country, the animals nearly pour into the shelters. Meanwhile the pet shops and breeders just keep on selling. Thank you for making a difference.

In addition to my last post, I also wanted to point out that the real people to blame are those who breed animals, buy animals at pet stores, abuse and neglect animals, and those who keep their animals outside and let them fend for themselves, just to name a few. Those at the shelter provide food, water, play, company, and medical care. These are indeed shelters, not "so-called" shelters as the author would say. Without these shelters, there would be a lot of homeless animals. Shelters also have certain guidelines in place to determine whether or not an animal will be placed in a suitable home. For example, Harbor Humane makes sure that animals that may be a bit aggressive are not placed in homes with kids, they make sure that if an animal does not get along with other animals, it will be an only pet. They will not adopt out to families that do not want to keep their pets indoors, fed, cared for, vaccinated, or fixed. This is FOR THE ANIMALS. Every day I go there, I see clearly burnt out vets taking care of animals. In what little time I am there compared to them, I can totally understand why. It's very hard to take care of such great animals and have to euthanize them in order to make room for more. It is very ignorant to hold grudges against animal shelters that are doing the best they can with what they have. Instead of criticizing, I suggest people get behind these shelters and spread the word about the adoptable animals. Volunteer. Donate. Do SOMETHING besides complain.

As someone who volunteers at a "kill shelter", I feel it is my responsibility to put this out there. The decision to euthanize animals is not a light-hearted one, but a heartbreaking decision that unfortunately must be made due to a lack of space (due in large part to a lack of funding). The local humane society is the only one for Ottawa County, and they currently have around 400 animals (300 cats, 100 dogs). I have seen what it's like there on a busy day when all of the kennels are full and there is no other place to go with the animals. It's not good, and it surely wouldn't be in the best interest of any animal to keep them at a shelter where there isn't enough room and funding to provide adequate care. In fact, if this happened, the shelter would be shut down due to sub-par conditions. How is this good for the animals? People at kill shelters hate having to euthanize animals, but unfortunately, this is often the only choice they have (the local humane society makes this decision based as much as possible on how adoptable the animal is, not how long it has been there). I used to hate Harbor Humane for making this decision until I started volunteering there, and then I understood. It's easy to get on a soap box and refuse to donate to kill shelters because of this, but this mentality is what's killing animals. Kill shelters desperately need all the help they can get, and to refuse this help is refusing to help the worthy animals at these shelters. What a shame.

I think this is a wonderful way to find homes for animals that would otherwise be euthanized in a "kill shelter". Maybe this will be one of the ways that animals in future years (ones from kill shelters that are overloaded) will be able to find a good forever home and not be euthanized!!!
This is great news!!!
