Join the Campaign Against Puerto Rico's Primate Breeding Facility

Animal advocates, scientists and lawyers are joining forces to oppose the construction of a research center in Puerto Rico that intends on breeding “many thousands of highly intelligent, sensitive macaques for export to research facilities.”
There is certainly no shortage of documentation regarding the suffering that captive primates face during transport and confinement, nevermind the painful experiments, which would seem to put a massive breeding facility at odds with Puerto Rico’s recently established animal welfare laws.
Puerto Rico’s new law, “provides specific guidelines for experimentation on live animals: specifically, scientific research on animals at universities is allowable only when it meets criteria deeming it “absolutely essential;” any other experiments are prohibited for educational purposes at the elementary, intermediate and higher education levels, and completely banned in facilities outside of university research labs. The proposed primate breeding facility would violate both the letter and the spirit of Puerto Rico’s progressive new law, which strictly limits the use of animals in experimentation,” according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

It has been proven by journal of responsible medicine that more often then not experiments on primates do nothing for the advancement of medical practice on humans..The DNA is not the same. Help stop the torture...

Ivonne, Sharon's point is that when people boycott something that is going on, which is horribly wrong by not supporting them, not giving them money through tourism, or not including them in world conferences etc, that government has to take notice and change their thinking. Such as when appartied was happening in South Africa, the country was boycotted by not allowing participation in international cricket games, olmpics, they were denouced internationally, and the people were not allowed to travel to other countries, SA still have scruteny went travelling. Reading your and others views, as I just tapped back into this site to investigate, I haven't realised before how bad it is there on so many levels. I am finding that PR is almost at ransom to foriegn money. As usual America has its corrupt greedy sticky fingers all over it. I know about these pharmacuetical companies, having a horrible monopoly on the medical world and how they control doctors on every level to the point it is distructive. I stopped going to doctors years ago when I realised this and they were putting my health in danger, and I started studying herbal medicine. Thats why this farming on monkeys is targeting your country becos it is politically vulnerable due to desparate and corrupt senators. I don't know much about Puerto Rico, but haven't felt the push to go there as have a bad feeling about it all, in the past. I can see the people have their hands tied and I feel sad for them. I will hel

I live here, and we do have some amazing people here, but I cannot sit back and hear this nonsense about how most people are good to their animals here, blah blah blah. They called for a boycott after the animal massacre in Barceloneta, and people begged no. They called for a boycott after the Humane Society was denied access to help in their trial. Maybe they could have even helped us solve the issue of 98% PUT DOWN RATE of animals on this island. Now we are begging no boycott and THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE.
We are business owners in San Juan, in the town where the cruise ships come in, and the last thing we want is a boycott, but NOTHING ELSE HAS MADE PEOPLE HERE ACT HUMANE.
The cosmetics companies are nothing compared to the vast American pharmaceutical companies that run our government. We bow to anything they command, including making their animal testing cheaper for them. You think THEY are going to pick up the bill for this facility? They will screw the people of this island even further.
There is no person on this island who should not be angry, for this affects everyone. Why do you think we just cut thousands of government jobs? Here's where the money is going!

I think we have to go after the newspapers:
cartas@elnuevodia.com ( letters from the readers)
This next one is the reporter that is writing about this issue in "El Nuevo dÃa": rcortes@elnuevodia.com
Yes, write in English or german is you need to!!!!! just help us to keep this problem in the newspapers, as Naida wrote, there are so much things going on in this little Island that is very easy to forget about the monkeys.
I have to go but I will give you more newspapers e-mails.
You can copy and paste the letter from the The Animal Legal Defense Fund and send it there if you don't have time to write your own.
THANK YOU!!!!

It has been approved. Now, we must concentrate in boicotting this infamous breeding facility in Guayama , Puerto Rico. We need international outrage opposing this MONKEY FACTORY! Please Help. There are so many unfortunate things that are happening one after another that is almost impossible to keep track of all the the humilliating and shamefull acts that are ocurring against the people of Puerto Rico by this senseless Governor and his lackey members of the Legislature (with certain exceptions) My e-mail add. astrolunamar@yayoo.com

It is sad,how we humans think and accept hurting and killing others and animals for one reason after another. I would like to see people (humans) learn to respect and love one another and also all animals. All animals have the right to live a good life, outside cages and not meant to be so...cruel to.I would like to end all animal research, farm factorys and fur farms. We all need to learn how to be kind to one another and animals and learn how to get along with.I think killing and torchering is the easy way out.Everyone can come up with an excuse to justify killing or torchering, but none of it is justified in my head. If I could justify hurting or killing in my heart, all the abusers would be who I would go for.Somewhere along the lines of growing up,I learned killing and torchering was wrong and mean.So I say,no to the new building to breed animals to suffer at the hands of humans! We need to do away with animal research! I don't believe humans cures are animal related.A dr. in research thought he had a cure, cause he found it in animals, but when used on a human it failed.I think animals are mostly an excuse, researchers use to practice on,because they are cheap and easy prey.Doors are closed to the public,so we can't see how inhumane research is and how ineffected it is and useless. We go to the moon,I think we can end the animal cruelty and find other non-animal measures and human measures(like stem cell) to find answeres and ways to help people possibly get better.
