Hundreds of Greyhounds Homeless Due To Wisconsin Track Closing
posted by: Beth Buczynski 77 days ago

It is always heartbreaking any time animals are used or abused solely for human entertainment or profit.
Greyhound racing has been widely criticized as an activity that does little more than encourage gambling and subject the animals to cramped conditions in which they are often starved so that they'll perform better on the track. Then, when the dogs are passed so-called "prime racing age" they are simply euthenized and forgotten.
It was recently announced that Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin, which houses around 900 dogs, will be closing on December 31, 2009. As a result, hundreds of these innocent dogs are at risk of being euthenized if adoptive families can't be found for them.
An Illinois organizer recently noted out that, "of the 900 Greyhounds currently there, about 600 to 650 considered “A” Level racers will be moved to other racetracks nationally. This means the other 200 to 250 dogs need to be adopted into loving homes."
While the local adoption center will do the best they can to handle this large influx of dogs at the end of the year, it will be up to families and individuals to welcome them into their homes and prevent unecessary euthenization.
If you have been considering surprising your loved ones with a new pet this holiday season, there could be no better demonstration of the true spirit of giving than to adopt one of these loving animals.
The Greyhound Project, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit organization providing information about and promoting the adoption of retired racing Greyhounds. Visit their site to learn more about what it would mean to accept one of these displaced dogs into your home.
If you would like to adopt one of the Dairyland greyhounds, call the Dairyland Racetrack Adoption Center at 262-612-8256 for full details.

If the track was able to benefit from these dogs for years and years, it seems like the least they can do now is help raise awareness of and money for these beautiful dogs seeking homes.
