October is Adopt a Dog Month
posted by: Aimee Gertsch 52 days ago

The month of October is Adopt-A-Dog month! American Humane is trying to help promote dog adoption from shelters and rescue groups. This is a great cause, since so many amazing dogs are waiting to find homes.
Their theme is Be a Superhero! How? By saving the day for a homeless dog. During the month they encourage everyone who can bring a dog into their lives to visit their local shelters and rescue groups. Not only will you meet some great dogs, but you can literally save a life.
There are a lot of benefits to having a dog including improved physical and emotional health. Anyone who has been blessed to have a dog can also tell you of the fun, and unconditional love, they provide.
"American Humane works year-round to support animal welfare organizations, promote adoptions and enhance the bond that people share with their companion animals. And each year during Adopt-A-Dog Month, we give shelters tools and resources to continue fostering connections between people and pets."
To find a dog near you, try Petfinder.com. You can also look in your phone book for your local shelter, and consult your vet. And remember, even if you can't adopt a dog, there are a variety of other animals in shelters and rescue waiting for homes. Always think adoption first and you could be a superhero!

I have adopted a great dog just recently. I notice how many people in the pole that were not adopting a dog. That makes me sad for all the dogs. A good dog does not be a pure breed dog. Adopted a dog please.

Up until January of this year I lived in a nursing home and was primary caretaker for one of the home's two dogs. My "roommate" was an Akita/German Shepherd mix from a rescue group and he was a perfect fit at the nursing home - young, healthy, calm and well mannered. He made a lot of friends with both the residents and the staff. I couldn't take him with me when I was discharged in January but the opportunity to adopt him has been presented to me and I am hoping to be reunited with my pal soon. I have been fortunate to share my life with seven great dogs and all but one were strays or from the local shelter. Shelter dogs rule!

I forgot to mention that my shelter dogs are now about 11 and 12 years old and in pretty good health, whereas my poor Maltese only lived to be 11 due to heart failure. So if anyone thinks that dogs from breeders are always healthier than pound dogs, please reconsider.

Pound puppies are the best! My fiance and I got both of our dogs from our local shelter and they are the best dogs ever. They were both between 1 and 3 years old when we adopted them, but had very little trouble adjusting to their new forever home. Today (10+ years years later), they are thankfully still with us and make us happy every day :)
P.S. They almost never bite, unlike my beloved but ill-tempered Maltese I had as a kid. My parents got him from a breeder and spent a small fortune on him. Goes to prove that dogs from breeders do not necessarily have a better temperment than dogs from shelters. Please consider adopting a shelter dog instead of buying one from a breeder or pet store!

I have 4 dogs; three of which are rescued. I have an Animal Hotline list of 150 people that I send photos of stray animals when a friend finds one & asks me to help. I wish I could take on more, but I am so busy with the 4 right now. I probably would get more sleep if I had given birth to 4 more children. My 4-legged family will never go away to college, get married or move out. They're mine till death do us part. They are 8, 5, 5 & 4 respectively; male, male, female, male. The 4 year old male decided he wants to be an Alpha Male & fights with the 8 and 5 yr. old males. So he & the female are in the house most of the time & it makes it really difficult to go anywhere for any length of time. But I love them so much I wouldn't give a single one of them away. I just wish they would let me sleep through the night. I also wish I could find a job working with animals & doing everything possible to save them from euthanasia. Animals are so innocent & so in need of compassionate human beings to be their rescuers. I hope this month yields a lot of adoptive pet parents.
