One Dog Policy in China
posted by: Aimee Gertsch 122 days ago

The government in this southern Chinese city of Guangzhou is implementing a one-dog policy starting on July 1. Because this new regulation won't be grandfathered in families with two or more dogs will have to choose between their furry friends on who gets to stay, and who gets to go.
There has been a lot of outcry over the policy, and with good cause. Anyone with a pet understands that they aren't just animals to be thrown by the wayside. They truly become family members, and trying to imagine making a choice between two family members is unthinkable.
Beyond the emotional pain that this regulation will cause to both the families and the dogs left behind, there is also a big question of what will happen to the dogs that are forced out of their homes. Will other homes be found for them? Will they just become strays?
Either way, it is a sad story for both human and animal. Why they are making such a policy when the animals are obviously being cared for and are in homes is very unclear. Let's hope that the government will change it's mind due to the public outcry.

We can REALLY THANK GOD, ALMIGHTY that we don't live in
China, or any other socialistic country, of course... the way Obama is trying to change things, you never know!!!

As presented, the law is highly immoral. If it prohibited the ownership of NEW dogs, and provided free neuter and spay procedures, it would still be unacceptably authoritarian, but not blatantly immoral. In a true socialistic system, the desires and needs of the majority people would come before the desires of the oligarchy. China is a mess, physically, and politically.

Michael wrote me & thinks I am young & idealistic. He says we can only let China know that we won't purchase from them until they change. If that would work, we should do it. We would have to learn how to make all the things that are MADE IN CHINA. I'm sure we can, because we did Once Upon A Time. But that fairy tale went out the door when we outsourced American Jobs to foreign countries, for whatever reason, cheap labor, trade agreements, etc. China has vowed to control the US slowly but surely. It seems they are doing an excellent job of that right under our noses. Our economy would be so much better off if we brought jobs back here & stopped fueling foreign countries with our assets. I know we owe them billions of dollars, but they "can't get blood out of a turnip". We need to consider our nation &our unemployment rate & our recession & our poor & create jobs by bringing back items that are MADE IN THE USA. I realize that if we don't understand history, we are doomed to repeat it. To be honest with you, I hated History class the most of all when I was a child. I just want to see common sense, however it can make a comeback. No time like the present. The US will not survive at this rate & countries like China will continue to control its population, human & animal regardless of my opinion. It just sickens me. I wish more people believed in God instead of trying to be HIM.

How moronic! Limit the number of children; limit the number of dogs; eat dogs for meals, take over the US by lending them money & flooding our market with their products. China needs to be monitored by United Nations. Is there anything anyone can do to STOP them from their stupidity & their ridiculous practices? I would love for this world to finally get some morals, some common sense & good leaders. China seems to be a horrible place & its leaders do not have good consciences. I am sickened. I have four dogs & I would have to buy a gun if someone tried to tell me that I could not keep them all. If the people of China are caring for their animals, what right does the government have to interject their laws into private lives? You know they will either eat the orphans or euthanize them, or are they heartless enough to just shoot them like abusers or puppy mill owners or stupid pet owners who dont spay their pets? Help us STOP them. This e-mail wont do it, Im sure. This makes me so sad & I have no respect for leaders and countries who enact these kinds of laws. We are playing into their hands. If the US & Obama & Pelosi get any more invasive in our private lives, they should prepare themselves for a mutiny & possibly a civil war. We are supposed to be a democracy. Hopefully the current administration will stop their nonsense & appeal to China, with whatever organizations will help.

Thank you for those that have spoken up for "those people" in China. What those families must be feeling, while having to make this horrific decision, is beyond me.
While this law truly makes my stomach turn, look at our own country before we start making it an "us" versus "them" issue.
We are all living in a world that doesn't treat animals with basic respect and our laws are a clear representation of that. Issues like factory farming make it clear that the US is not beyond similar behavior.
Speak up and inform people, rather than generalizing an entire country. We need solutions not more hate.

I think that those animals will eventually become strays and seeing that China has a blooming fur industry, some of them will just be slaughtered for their fur. SICKENING!

This policy is of no use.
The people of this country are being treated as SLAVES and nothing else. They are being forced to do things which they themselves don't want to.
This policy should have been for people or families who are economically poor-who can keep only one dog. In what way is this policy good for people who are from middle & upper classes who can completely afford to keep dogs in good conditions but are not being allowed.
I mean we people in India do have enormous poverty rates, but atleast we can keep as many dogs as we want.
China is torturing that "small section" of its society/citizens who care for animals. In hope that those people too will abandon the thought of being kind to animals.
Boycott China and let them know it.
The basic rights of people are being taken from them. Its sick !

I think certain requirements for pet owners are fine: you must spay or neuter your pet if it is not a show animal and you are not intending to breed it, you must keep it leashed or fenced for its own safety, you must have enough space to keep it and its companions, etc. And obviously, the hoarders out there need to be severely limited. But pets like company! Having 2 pets is good for both of them! With more and more people around the world having to have 2 or 3 jobs to maintain basic necessities, they simply don't have the time for their pets. Giving a pet a friend is essential for the animal. They're social creatures, just like us. This law is another example of the true shortsighted stupidity that governments seem unable to avoid. I'm all for China's one-child policy, and in fact, I think similar policies should be replicated in many other countries around the world, but a 1 dog policy is unfair to the dog, especially one stuck in an apartment building for most of the day alone.

That is so stupid first a child policy now pets this is not fair to make peopl decide this. You'll have more strays and more animals suffering re-think this act as it is crazy. I hope it doesn't go ahead i'd be moving.
