Rescue Pets of the Day: Shari and Brooke

Care2 member Maria C. adopted her sweet dogs Shari, a black terrier / border collie mix and Brooke, part husky, all adorable, from the Winnipeg Humane Society. She can tell you what many people know from experience - adopting a rescue animal can have its challenges at the beginning, but the rewards, including unconditional love and a warm lap, outweigh everything.
"Both were abandoned and came with emotional baggage," says Maria. Maria and her family adopted Brooke at 5 months old. She had some separation anxiety at first and went through a "destructive phase." Brooke, who was adopted by Maria at 14 months, had been returned to the Humane Society twice because of her behavioral issues. Maria is the hero who saw Brooke for the amazing dog she could be. Maria took the time to train Brooke and most importantly love her as they worked through her issues.
"TLC turned them into amazing dogs," says Maria proudly. "Both are loved tremendously!"

Good for you Maria. I'm so happy for those lovely dogs, they sure deserved a 2nd chance. Wish there were more people like Maria. I volunteer at the local shelter and get so angry at times at people and there ridiculous reasons for dumping their animals.

When my dog died after 14 years of love, I thouht I could never bond with another dog. I went to a neighborhood Shelter and saw an abandoned small dog curled up in a little ball in the corner of a great big crate. I was fortunate enough to fall in love and adopt her. We did not know how or if she would adjust. She turned out to be smart, clean and affectionate. I would definitely endorse adoption. Most problems, if any, can be worked out and it is worth it.

I just got my second rescue 9 days ago and she was an owner turn in--she is adorable, headstrong, precious to me, and has rejuvenated my two 5 year old dogs and me!! Rescue, rescue, rescue!!!!!
