Standing Up To Illegal Whaling Operations -- Care2 Member Takes the Lead!
posted by: Andrew Aviza 58 days ago

For years, a portion of the Japanese whaling fleet has engaged in illegal whaling activities in the Antarctic and lack of enforcement and regulation has allowed them to operate largely unopposed. Operating under the Dutch flag, Sea Shepherd, an international, non-violent organization protecting the world's oceans, has tried to stop these poachers, but have been met with strong resistance.
In fact, powerful resistance from the illegal whaling industry has been on the uptick. Whaling operations have repeatedly complained to the Dutch government about the work Sea Shepherd has done to protect whales because it has cut into their industry. Unfortunately, it appears as though the illegal whalers may have finally succeeded in gaining enough traction to dictate Dutch law and are trying to enact a ban on Sea Shepherd's work in the Netherlands. For Care2 member Claudia, from the Netherlands, the thought of losing Sea Shepherd had huge ramifications for the health of whales and other ocean life. Starting a citizen petition, she quickly saw that thousands of people in her country and countries around the world supported the Sea Shepherd's work. Her petition generated over 7,000 signatures urging the Dutch Government to stand strong and support the international laws protecting whales that the Sea Shepherds standup for.
On Tuesday September 22nd, Claudia went to The Hague (the Netherlands' seat of government) to meet with two cabinet members -- delivering 7,697 signatures urging the Netherlands government to continue to let Sea Shepherd sail under the Dutch flag and not be bullied by the whaling industry.
On behalf of myself and Care2, we'd like to give Claudia and everyone else who's actively making the world a better place a huge a round of applause! We know there are thousands of you just like Claudia and together we're making real changes. Please share your success stories by emailing me here: successstories@earth.care2.com

Agnes. Im an Australian and there are more like me who are insensed by what is going on to do with Whaling. Please dont lump us citizens into the one basket b/c we are very passionate about Whales. You see our Enviromental minister or so called 'whaling minister' Peter Garratt is a turn coat. Not us. He was a singer in his band and still does it from time to time, called MIDNIGHT OIL now he sang songs and sold songs telling all and sundry what the govt should do and he supported it and so should we. Well the Labor Govt enticed him I guess with a beautiful big carrot to come and join them. The Labor govt all thought they would 'use' him to entice the younger generation who had followed P. Garratt for years and it worked b/c all voted for him. WRONG!! then the s*** hit the fan b/c on day one he became a turn coat and all hated him and smashed his CD's and I am sure he then realized what a jerk he was to the Aussie people. To think HE took a step back and you know and i guess I am right is that he was a bit wet behind the ears or was looking and the $$$ and it was the Labor PM who is the controller and the other cronies you cant see who dictates what is what and where. No youre wrong Agnes...we arent saving face that is the Japanese requirement not Australians. We have petitioned and written and made stances to no avail. We have been hoodwinked. But at the end of the day n I am very sad to say its all political and has money dangling here n there. Its a disgrace n embarrassing

Now I know why I became a British citizen first and sso lost my Dutch one. I've got all admiration for you Claudia, and I'll say again I'll follow you all the way and NOT the Dutch government. They are like so many other countries more interested in the Japanese business dealings. Even the Australians are more concerned about loosing face than the Whales even if they are in the Australian territory of the Antarctic.
I'll follow you Claudia and have signed a few petitions but hope to sign more to stop the whaling of the japanese where ever they are!
I do hope we are helping you Claudia and NOT GET YOU into trouble with the Dutch Government as that's the last thing we want. I do know how some of the Dutch people can be and as you notice I did say SOME. Send us more petitions to sign and I'm sure we're all behind you and sign them. I've also send this to my facebook and hope they'll help you as well, I've got some friends there and will get in touch with them asap.
Claudia I wish you all the best in Holland and hope to see more of you in Care2. I'm only a newcomer so I'm just getting the hang of it all. But as far as I'm concerned, I FOLLOW YOU TO THE END OF THE WORLD.
Please keep in touch.
Agnes

The End of Japanese Whaling in the Southern Ocean is in Sight !
Commentary by Captain Paul Watson
The Yakuza controlled Japanese whaling fleet left Japan yesterday and have officially begun their 6,000 mile voyage to the remote waters of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Their intention is to slaughter 925 protected Antarctic Minke whales and 50 endangered Fin whales inside the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in violation of the global moratorium on commercial whaling and in violation of the Antarctic Treaty.
These people are poachers. They are criminals and they are engaged in the remorselessly cruel slaughter of the largest, most intelligent and most socially complex sentient beings in the oceans.
The Japanese fleet of eight ships will head south down the Eastern Pacific coastline of Asia past the West coast of Australia to the edge of the Antarctic ice fields, and there they will unleash the horror of their harpoon cannons with the intent to extinguish the lives of nearly a thousand whales. They are doing this under the ridiculously bogus excuse that the killing is being conducted for scientific research.
