Another anti-woman anti-choice bill fails as Georgia Republicans in the House have decided to kill a full 20 week abortion ban rather than pass the Senate version which provides for exceptions for “medically futile” pregnancies.
If that doesn’t speak to the cruelty motivating these bills, I don’t know what does.
HB 954 would have shortened the time in which a woman could seek an abortion to 20 weeks. As originally introduced the bill would have forced women to carry-to-term fetuses that had already died in utero or would not survive outside the womb since most those conditions develop and present past the 20 week mark.
The Georgia Senate thought this seemed a little cruel and passed a version of the bill that would allow women in those situations to get an abortion beyond 20 weeks. This ultimately became a showdown between Republicans as the House Republicans wouldn’t accept a ban with exceptions and Senate Republicans wouldn’t back off the amendments.
Given the passions fueling this bill I think we can expect to see another version next legislative session. But for now the bill is dead and women in Georgia won’t be forced to carry non-viable pregnancies to term against their will.
