An enchanting video of a baby polar bear named Siku is destined to take the world by storm. Siku (the name means Sea Ice) is being raised by hand in a Danish zoo because his mother could not nurse him.
Just one month old, Siku will need 24/7 care for the first year of his life. Polar bears are threatened by the effects of climate change, as shrinking Arctic ice forces them to struggle to find food. Scientists estimate that there are some 20 – 25,000 polar bears left in the wild. The animals are listed as ”threatened” by the US Department of the Interior under the Endangered Species Act, and are classified as “vulnerable” on the IUCN World Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened Species.
