Did you know that there are now more tigers living in captivity than there are in the wild? The big cats of the world are disappearing at alarming rates. National Geographic Society and Explorers-in-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert, launched the Big Cats Initiative to help spread the word and hopefully save these majestic animals.
“We no longer have the luxury of time when it comes to big cats,” says Dereck Joubert. “They are in such a downward spiral that if we hesitate now, we will be responsible for extinctions across the globe. If there was ever a time to take action, it is now.”
The second annual Big Cat Week is premiering this Sunday, December 11th through December 17th on Nat Geo WILD. The week is part of the National Geographic’s Big Cat’s Initiative, and features programs from award winning filmmakers, including an airing of the film The Last Lions. The Last Lions premieres Friday 12/16 at 8P ET, but you can catch a small sneak peek right here. Video: Lion Cub Adventures

You can help support big cats on Care 2.

No animals should be kept in a zoo anywhere in the world. Animals should live free like us. They need space. Zoo are commercial, they make people believe that they are there to protect animals and save them. In fact they are a machine to make more and more money. Can we imagine ourselves living in small space and surrounded all day long with people watching us, kids screaming loudly. Can we live in such condition and we will be happy? I don't think so.
So if it is not good for us, so why it is good for animals. Zoo or any place for animal captivity should be banned. If I were an animal, I would prefer to be shot than to live in captivity with human. Instead of having zoo, maybe we should have huge sanctuaries (not opened to public) where animals can live free, then here we can talk about conservation and saving species.
Today is a sad day for big cats in captivity. Because today, during Big Cat Week, a tiger escaped from one of Romania's zoos was cowardly and shamefully shot to death by local authorities. They had the alternative of using tranquilizers but failed to implement that. What a shame. Romania should be banned from having zoos, all animals should be transferred to more apt and concerned countries.
We are culling the wrong species. Humans ARE the worst species on the planet. If we don't wise up and stop the killing then I don't want to live in a world void of animals.
It's terribly sad that there are more big cats in captivity than in the wild. Sad and disgusting.
Lynn M....well said!
Thanks for the article.
don't forget to help the big cats that could be killed if the wildlife waystation closes down. please share to save them.
I love these animals, please protect them :)
I don't get hunters at all! They must be of a different species! Why hunt animals? There should be concise laws to protect the cats and all animals, at that -- these laws should be actively and strictly enforced -- penalties and consequences should be seriously severe.
