UPDATE
From The Washington Post:
The surgeon who operated on Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said he is “optimistic” about her recovery. Pima County sheriff says six people were killed in the Tucson shooting that wounded Giffords.
Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson this morning.
According to NPR:
The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.
Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up firing indiscriminately and then ran off, Michaels said.
The suspect was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody. He was not injured.
Giffords, 40, is just beginning her third term. She was first elected to represent Arizona’s 8th district in 2006, and is known to have worked on immigration issues.
I am sure everyone is wishing her the very best. Let’s hope this is not the beginning of more crazy political violence in this country.

I AGREE WITH LOUIS LIEPACK, WE NEED A BETTER MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM!!!!!
the guy was an obvious whack job i'm suprised he wasn't already locked away somewhere. some people blame guns for what happened but a person can do just as much damage with a knife or poison or a fertelizer bomb or a number of other tools that are extremely easy to come by. if you want to take out a person or persons then no one can really be safe because there are so many ways to kill a person. that's just how it is. it's too bad that things like that have to happen
My thoughts and prayers go to all the victims and their families.
if the police treat people better then there be no need for guns
Prayers to all. Mental health services need to be properly funded. Too few services are covered for too short a time. Purchasing guns should not be so easy.
It is time for gun control people to rise up. Do you object to the limitations on getting a license to drive a car. Cars kill people too I think more die from cars than guns every year.
If guns don't kill people, then neither does herion, meth etc.
We need gun control. For every one person that is saved by a gun, thousands of innocents are killed or hurt.
It's good to hear that the doctors are optimistic. My heart goes out to the families who weren't so lucky, especially the family of the little girl
