Can Santorum Fire Up Conservatives For Romney?

Can Santorum Fire Up Conservatives For Romney?

Despite promising strip Planned Parenthood of funding, push to overturn Roe v. Wade and embracing the most extreme anti-immigration policies in the country, Mitt Romney just can’t get the conservative base enthusiastic about his candidacy. It’s so bad, he’s called in Rick Santorum for help.

Santorum is organizing an event at the Republican National Convention later this month to rally the conservative base behind Romney. According to The Hill, Santorum’s willing to leverage his conservative credentials in exchange for a prominent speaking role at the convention, though apparently the Romney camp has made no promises Santorum will get such a platform.

The event is scheduled to take place in the afternoon of Wednesday, August 29, the day before Romney officially becomes the Republican Party’s presidential nominee. Assuming it moves forward then it would suggest the rough edges between the Romney and Santorum camps have been smoothed out.

But giving Santorum a prime-time speaking slot is a dangerous proposition for the Romney camp. They absolutely need the conservative base to turn out in support of a Romney ticket, but as important are independent voters. Santorum’s deep conservative roots will only alienate moderates who, unlike Santorum, believe contraception is acceptable and that the church should not dictate political policy.

As the convention gets closer the pressure on Romney becomes more intense. He’s going to have to define himself as a candidate–both to the conservative base and to the larger American electorate. That means taking clear positions and offering policy specifics. Should he accept Santorum’s help with the base, then it’ll be clear that Romney’s strategy will be to run hard to the right and hope Republican voter suppression efforts pay off.

@Steve R.My wife is a registered republican and she can hardly wait to vote for Obama. I think the others are right. You think conservative means making everybody think the way you think and believe the way you believe. Incidentally, the word "liberal" comes from the word "liberty"-a word you and those like you obviously know nothing about. The word "totalitarian" fits y'all just fine.

(continued)I want them to explain how they are going to get rid of the HCA and what they are going to replace it with. And I want them to explain their plans for Medicare. I want all that laid bare for the American public to see, read and hear and then mull over all the way to the voting booth in November. I can't think of a better use for Rick Santorum than to bolster the President's re-election chances which he will most certainly do. Hell, let's make him keynote speaker, in prime time. Great move, Mitt, one of many. Just keep 'em coming.

Righteous Rick and Money Mittens....what a pair they would be!! Sanatorium is nuts and Mittens is a pathological liar, or just plain stupid. The Repuke national convention should be carried on the Comedy Central channel!!

Santourum might fire up a portion of the GOP/T-bagger base but Mitty's goose is already cooked as far as I'm concerned and I think the results in November will bare that out. Thanks Jessica for the article.

"Assuming it moves forward then it would suggest the rough edges between the Romney and Santorum camps have been smoothed out."
I think they meant to say that the "Santorum camps have been bought out" not smoothed out.
Are the young Americans really willing to accept a future with "No Form of Contraception" being enforced by their government? And how on earth is Santorum going to enforce it?
This is just plain out and out stupidity, particularly coming from America who have been promoting contraception in countries like Africa, India and any other 3rd world nation that the government of USA thinks is "too populated" for decades.......this is all too much even for the best of Comedy Shows.

Steve R. I am going to reitrate what I posted earlier..

I do not see the religious right voting for Mitt Romney no matter what Rick (google santorum) Santorum or any of the religious rights leaders have to say on the matter.

too many of the fundamentalist/evangelical christians. Have been taught that a mormon is not a christian. for thirty years these people have been told voting for a non christian is a sin. I do not see the evangelical/fundamentalist christians voting for Mitt Romney.

And by the Steve R.

Rick (google santorum) Santorumm is not only hated here in Pennsylvania by the independent voters and democrats, but by many republicans as well. Proof? When Arlen Spector seat came up for grabs he ran in the republican primary and lost by 18 points..

He may have stated it was his family and daughters health that forced him out of the Race. the reality is that he did not want his @ss handed to him again here in Pennsylvania..

The problem with you commenting on this article, Steve R., is that you wouldn't know a true conservative if one shat on your empty head.

I know at least one conservative that will be voting for Obama. And I suspect that there are many, many others. The problem with this article and its title is that the term "conservative" has been polluted; a good many of the twits like you who will vote for Romney aren't all that conservative, but are instead more accurately labeled as reactionary or rightwing -- sad behavior that true conservatives do not wish to align themselves with.

You would have done well to have first read Anne C.'s post before you went ahead and provided the rest of us with your shallow perspective. You two basically concluded the same thing, but she did it with much more cogency and accuracy.

On a broader note: one must congratulate South Africa for KEEPING the cream of the crop, like the Olympic runner Pistorious, while REMOVING the dregs, like Steve R., to other parts of the world. South Africa's gain is in this instance America's loss.
