Ron Barber, a former aide to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., easily won the race to succeed her Tuesday.
Barber defeated Republican Jesse Kelly, an Iraq War veteran who had lost narrowly to Giffords in 2010, to become the new U.S. Representative from Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. With 50.3 percent of precincts reporting, Barber received 52 percent of the vote to Kelly’s 45 percent. Green Party candidate Charlie Manolakis received 2 percent.
Barber was wounded in the assassination attempt against Giffords, who ultimately resigned her seat due to the rigors of rehabilitation from her injuries. Barber was shot in the face and thigh. Nine other victims were wounded, and six others died in the attack.
Barber had served as district director for Giffords from 2007 until her retirement. Born in England just after the end of World War II, Barber worked in the Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities and as a partner with his wife in a small business.
Barber will serve out the balance of Giffords’ term, until January of 2013. He has already said he will stand for election in the newly-reconfigured 2nd Congressional District this fall, which will cover most of the current 8th Congressional District. Kelly also is on the ballot in the 2nd, meaning that this race will be re-run in five short months.

Absolutely! People just don't decide one day that they're gay...anyway this a topic that can be debated…
Frank while I agree you are born a genetic male or female, except in cases such as fragile X I also believe…
I adopted from the foster people. If I fostered I would need a separate house to live in.

Thank you.
Thank you.
That is good news for Arizona, for Ron, and Gabby. Congratulations to all.
I agree with Carl that it will be an uphill climb in November because of the tea party and the Citizens United decision by the right wing supreme Court. The wealthy in this country are already buying elections thus subverting our election process. UN American and unpatriotic!
I donated to Ron Barbers campaign but I must admit that I was very worried about his winning. Congratulations Ron. The sad part is that he will have to run again in November and with all the Republican Super PAC money that rolled into Wisconsin the Republicans may be better funded and organized to defeat Barber in November. Hopefully, Barber will keep his seat and deny another of teh crazed Tea Partyers the seat.
Glad there are some in AZ who have not lost their sanity. Good luck in Nov. Mr. Barber. Thank you for the article Jeff.
Wow she looks wonderful. Good jobs Democrats in the state that voted. Just do not forget about November when it will Really be needed
Good Job
Arizona wise up .. vote Democrat!
Something positive in my day today.
Well, that's good because if he did not win, the GOP would have found new way to win office.
