Nike Celebrates Title IX with Film on Famous Female Athletes

This past weekend Title IX celebrated its 40th anniversary. In honor of this milestone Nike released a new film called “Voices.”

The film features four female athletes including Joan Benoit Samuelson, the first women’s marathon gold medalist, Marlen Esparza, boxing national champion, and Diana Taurasi and Lisa Leslie, two famous WNBA players.

The film shares these women’s stories of defying gender stereotypes in sports in an effort to inspire future generations of female athletes.

Check out the video for yourself!

When these female athletes were told they couldn’t play a sport because they were too small, or the boys on their team wouldn’t pass to them, or they were spit on, or pushed out of the way they persevered. They didn’t quit and they triumphed and thanks to Title IX girls can continue to make strides in sports like those before them!

What do you think about Nike’s video?

In addition to the comments by Gene J. (which I personally do not know as true but am not surprised at all), this is the same company that signed a huge endorsement deal with Michael Vick. A convicted felon for Dog Fighting who, in my opinion, served way too little time for that atrocity. On top of that, he has never apologized for his actions. He is scum and will always be. He may be a great athlete but he is a despicable human being. Nike uses its great advertising and promotion power to help make the rest of us forget all the things they do wrong. I never buy or even consider anything Nike makes and urge all my friends to not buy from Nike.

sometimes the best man for the job is wo-man. at that elite level, of athletics or academics, talent and ability is not gender based and has a strong component of mental strength and focus and determination along with a drive to dismiss distraction. even in my youth I could not do what Lisa Leslie, Brandi Chastain, et al could do, and, so what? those are not my fields. we must find our own and cheer others doing the same.
