Sanctuary Offers Sunny Days for Street Cats in Serbia
Any animal lover who feeds strays in the street on a regular basis has the recurring daydream of whisking them all away to safety, and for Danica Mirkovic of Serbia, dreams do come true.
For many years, Danica and her fellow volunteers of Felinologic Association Felix took care of stray cats in Novi Sad, making sure they had food and water and that their veterinary needs were tended to. But there was simply no way to protect the cats from the day-to-day dangers that come with homelessness. And one day, out of the blue, one of the cats was harmed so irreparably that Danica could not squelch the fire in her heart.
“I found a kitten with his hind legs cut off on the street,” Danica recalls tearfully. “I knew then that I had to move out of town.”
Astonishingly, Danica was able to save the kitten, whom she named Milance and he grew into “a beautiful and happy tomcat.” Though his life was cut eventually cut short by sepsis which set in during early adulthood, he was deeply loved and he gave Danica the motivation and the courage to take the next step.
She Rounded Up All the Cats …
In 2010, Danica and her associates rounded up all the cats and she drove them away with her to a small village in the Vojvodina region of Serbia.
“We have 90 cats here at Cat Shelter Felix and all of them are here to stay for the rest of their lives,” Danica said proudly. ” They are all neutered and spayed, vaccinated and checked by the vet on a regular basis and although some of them are very old, or chronically ill, it seems that they all enjoy their lives here.”
“In spite of the fact that my shelter is rather crowded, I can never turn my back on a cat in desperate situation, therefore they keep arriving every now and then,” Danica explained. “As the number of cats grows bigger my expenses rise and it becomes harder and harder to defray them all, but the sight of happy kitties which are playing and running and resting completely relaxed, probably for the first time in their lives, makes all the efforts worthwhile.” (see video at bottom of page)
You Can Reach Out to These Cats
Anyone who has ever cared for multiple pets knows the expense that comes with food, litter and veterinary care — to say nothing of all the work involved in cleaning and caring for each individual.
With greatest respect for Danica’s selfless daily care of the cats, the Harmony Fund sent a donation to help with sanctuary rennovations and veterinary care this week and we’re hoping to make a second contribution if more support becomes available.
