Rosie O’Donell spoke on March 9 to two gay men who are the offspring of famously anti-gay families.
One of them was Randy Roberts Potts, the grandson of the late controversial televangelist Oral Roberts. He talked with O’Donell about his upbringing in the Roberts family compound.
Potts talks about how his parents’ prejudice affects his own children, mentioning overhearing them telling their friends that their “grandparents don’t love them.”
He explains that they were raised to believe that gay people are almost demonic. His uncle committed suicide because he was gay, and he tells O’Donell about how he confronted his mother about how preaching against a group of people does real damage:
“This is why your brother killed himself. This is why your two sons aren’t close to you… There are kids out there… Your message is killing them,” he said he told her.
Potts is touring the Bible Belt as part of a “Gay Agenda” tour, the aim of which is illuminating the normality of the lives of gay couples. He is marrying his partner, Keaton, in May.
