With Secretary of State Hillary Clinton making it abundantly (and repeatedly) clear that she will not be running for president, the political speculation has turned to the next Clinton woman in line, as all pundits keep their eyes out for a potential Chelsea Clinton political campaign.
Sure, it’s way too early for the daughter of Bill and Hillary to head for the White House, but Congress? That may be a different story.
Less than two weeks ago, Hillary admitted that her daughter might have “the public service bug,” but that she was unsure if Chelsea would be turning that into a campaign any time soon.
But now, sources are claiming that a New York congressional seat has already been picked out for the former First Daughter — the elder Clinton’s home district #18, a solidly Democratic area that would be an easy win for Chelsea.
There’s only one small problem with the plan. No one appears to have asked current Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey if she really wants to retire yet. Lowey says “no way.” According to New York Daily News, “Lowey spokesman Matthew Dennis told our Alison Gendar, ‘Congresswoman Lowey is 100% running for re-election in 2012. She is not retiring.’ One Democratic operative similarly told Gendar when asked about the Lowey/Clinton item, ‘News to me. They love Nita in Westchester.’”
Oops. Well, I guess there’s always 2014.
