Dispatches From The War On Women: As Goes Texas, So Goes The Nation

Welcome to Dispatches, your round-up of the latest news from the frontlines of the War on Women. Have a story from your state or an idea on how to push back? Share them here and fight back against the War on Women.

Texas may now well be the epicenter where hard right policies come with a violent and horrific cost. The latest evidence is this tragic news of a young lesbian couple found shot in the head in a South Texas park. One of the young women died from her injuries while the other remains in critical condition. There’s every reason to believe this was a hate crime.

Related: it’s tempting to make fun of the Texas GOP 2012, but the reality is this is the future of the national party. So instead of simply mocking it, let’s expose it for the values it embraces: Old South segregationist policies and Dominionist Christian theological imperatives. Let’s also remind people that those are the exact same values that just cost two young women their lives. And then lets promote the work of the tireless progressives in that state fighting the good fight.

To mark the anniversary of Title IX Nike released this film on famous female athletes. I will admit this made me cry.

The march toward justice can be slow, but in this case it is worth it. A federal judge ruled a rape victim can sue the Hillsborough County, Fla. Sheriff for preventing her from taking emergency contraception.

The state of Kansas is trying to take away this woman’s medical license because she refused to force a 10-year-old girl to continue a pregnancy against her will. Juvenile forced birth–that’s the platform of the Kansas GOP.

Despite the fact that there’s no ID requirement to purchase Plan B good luck getting it at this pharmacy without it.

The hypocrisy is just so thick with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) it would be astonishing if it wasn’t so predictable. His latest gem: adding an federal fetal personhood amendment to a flood relief bill. Because, you know, liberty.

Finally, this: same-sex marriage bans are not cheap.

Thanks for checking back and don’t forget to send in your stories, suggestions and comments. We’ll be back each weekday with the latest in the best and the worst from the War on Women. So long as the battle rages, we’ll cover the latest, so please check back!

Oh, David, my thanks to you, A lesson for all of us. Even though we speak a similar language, we have both have this thing called slang, and there is another called inflection and they differ.

Imagine that, two nations that share so much, including our root language, thank god that we beat the British in the 1812 War...whops, there I go again. We did win...didn't we. No matter.

As for the other matter, it lies in the words, "As a resident of Arizona, I am incensed, after all, Texaas is humid State, as an Arizonian, I take exception. We may be known as a dry State, now we are being called "The Dry Hate State."
All lies within the essence of my last paragraph.

If you are unable to understand the underlying meaning, there must be a good number of Arizonians residing somewhere near Lincolnshire. The problem lies in the fact that most are too embarrassed to admit the fact.

At least to date, we are lucky to not have hundreds of thousands of CCD cameras poking down through the rain and fog spying on our citizens, perhaps we should have.

As Texaas goes, so goes the Nation. Well said!

What a bright alumni...Rick Perry, George Dubya Bush, etc. By the way, which one of them won the bet about who could kill the most prisoners awaiting Death Row.

Now this case that has arisen concerning the killing of one woman and the other left in critical condition. It is becoming dangerous to "come out," when those "men" in those white robes and pointy hats are on the loose.

As a resident of Arizona, I am incensed, after all, Texaas is humid State, as an Arizonian, I take exception. We may be known as a dry State, now we are being called "The Dry Hate State."

Yes, As goes Texaas, so goes the nation. Do you hear the sound of a toilet flushing? I could not be sure, I have so long used a composting type.

RE: "There’s every reason to believe this was a hate crime."

Is murder ever a love crime?

Grow up people. Texas doesn't have any more bad people or laws than your own precious state. If Texas has put more people to death for crimes that they commited, it's because Texas is larger than most states.
Would you want a rapist or murderer set free in a few years if it was a member of your family that the crime was commited against? I think not. Some crimes are so heneous that they do deserve the death penalty. The sooner lthe better. Why use tax dollars to give them free medical, dental, exercize rooms etc. many, many years?

With Scary Perry leading the way, don't mess with Texas. Tragic.....

Hi Susan,
You are certainly an enchanting Texan I must say! I think John
Steward succinctly made his point when he aired an interview with Rick
Perry where the less than distinguished Gov. could not answer just
what it was he wanted to stop with respect to the Obama
Administration. I think he muttered something like "I will get back
with you" in a live interview. It was pointed out that this man who
is so uncertain is quite quick, as his predecessor, to flip that
execution switch in spite of questionable evidence and the
unwillingness to await DNA results. After the tenure of Little King
George W. and Lyndon Johnson I have to agree with Bill Mahr on the
subject that no more Texans get to be president, EVER!

Like the Basque region of Spain, let Texas go! And good luck! Maybe
the Lone Star State could make a go of it and compete with some of its
South American nations. I have lived in Texas as a child and spent
some time there and love the state and its people in many ways. I
refer to Austin and San Antonio as Free Texas and I am less enamored
of Dallas and Houston. But the belligerence of many of its citizens,
and its politicians from Tom Delay to John Cornyn is unparalleled.

I am just so tired of all the nonsense now being talked about in our
nation about public policy versus private enterprise. Like spoiled
children, this Congress is so full of it. Name any private enterprise
which was not ultimately

I would think the stats on how many people have been put to death compared to all other states, then you people are not listening. I am a Texican by birth (mother's side), and I can speak personally: the Texans are the greatest story tellers and we'd all like to go out for a beer with, but I will tell you personally (I grew up in the North East) that it's all show and most are brainwashed. IE: "Don't mess with Texas"

They think that they all have a chance to become the 1%. Shows: out of touch with reality, but then a lot of them were still around when some idiot struck oil. Those days were gone when the feds showed up.

They threatened to secede from the union. they are so full of it, we should let them. See if they can drink gulf water, or get it from the Rio Grande (LOL). Who will put out their fires? Who will sell them electricity so they can keep their houses at 70 degrees. Their attitude is if it moves shoot it. And.. you Yankees who have moved there and are so enchanted, you are no longer a Yankee, you are thought of and called a Damn Yankee.

It's disgusting to think it was a hate crime. These brief stories are just horrible acts against women and in response, I've created Tshirts to support a woman's right to equality and contraception and abortions. Here's one of my Tshirts:

@ Char L: "Well, Rose, I looked at your profile, and all I see that kind of makes you at home here is animal welfare for livestock. Maybe you'd be happier at a tea party site...

Well, Char L, I looked at your profile. I'm a cat lover too.
