Welcome to Dispatches, your round-up of the latest news from the frontlines of the War on Women. Have a story from your state or an idea on how to push back? Share them here and fight back against the War on Women.
Happy Independence Day! How are you celebrating? If you’re a Republican, likely by taking a swipe at women’s independence all in the name of “helping”. Here are a couple of examples. To start there is this New York GOP Senator who thinks the whole “war on women” thing would be taken care of if women were just more “ladylike.” Even better, he plans on hosting a “business etiquette and social protocol” summit to help women cultivate their “feminine presence.”
Here’s another example. Virginia’s mandatory ultrasound law is set to go into effect and to “help” women and the girls in the state who need an abortion but can’t afford the extra, medically-unnecessary procedure the state released a list of “clinics” that provide ultrasound for free. The problem is, almost all of the clinics on the list are crisis pregnancy centers and may not actually satisfy the requirements of the law. Is this a case of governmental incompetence or something more sinister?
Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill) is best known as a Tea Party dead beat dad who has a real problem with the fact that his challenger, Lt. Col. Tammy Duckworth lost both her legs in Iraq. Walsh, who has not served in the military, doesn’t believe Duckworth is a “true hero” like John McCain.
A Navy SEAL training facility had planned on using an image of a Muslim woman wearing a hijab and aiming a gun as target practice up until the Council on American-Islamic Relations objected.
Mitt Romney isn’t eager to talk about the fact that he invested in a company that disposed of aborted fetuses.
After a drunk driver killed her son this grieving mother was stuck paying for the clean up.
Want to wreck a public university? Just ask Gov. Chris Christie how to do it.
Louisiana approves state funds for religious schools–just so long as they are christian.
There’s a serious movement to rid the gaming community of misogyny and they’re bringing in the big guns.
This is a project we can get behind. The Bitch List is an effort to get more quality female characters in film. It will be a compilation of great scripts that have well-developed female characters in front of producers, read and made into a film.
The nuns on the bus are still going!

+ add your ownYes, yes.....and there were a few pathetic women who stood up for Sarah Palin, too!
Until you convince me that Mitt Romney will support my right to equal pay for equal work and keep his nose out of my reproductive choices....I will NEVER believe he's a friend to women.
Listen to what women, who know him, are saying about Mitt Romney:

Does this sound like a war on women to you?
Are these women victims?
Or, is truth the victim?
Compare Romneys administration to the Obama Administrations treatment of women:

Dont be fooled
If I were wealthy enough, I'd move to Louisiana and open schools of Scientology, Wiccan Lore,
Santeria and Voodoo!
Then I'd apply for State funding and, if they refused me, I'd sue them from here to Baton Rouge!
I'd win, too!
WAR on WOMEN is a major GOP agenda goal!!! Women only have the rights their husbands accord to them. There are still women today who think this way and vote Conservative.
Lika,
Your comments show that you have not read the many comments I have made on the War on Women. I had/have very strong women in my family, and I was taught that although Women are under valued/appreciated, I was taught how much Women/Mothers give and more often than not it's a hell lot more than men, and so I HAVE ALWAYS supported/ spoken up for Equal Rights & and shattering of all glass ceilings. MY sister is a big inspiration, she's let nothing stop her from achieving her dreams, and it TOOK YEARS, SACRIFICE, and Tears. I have no problem saying my sister is stronger than I, and ALWAYS has had my support. Fact, if she were writing this to you about me, I think you'd find I am much 'tamer', and with words she'd shread you.
Dan L & Stefan,
I hope you are realizing that there IS a difference between "equal" and "same". Women do not "get" preferential treatment in court. Mothers take time to nurture their children, as a general rule. If you think that it's preferential treatment, then be men and stand up to show that you can be just as nurturing of a father, to equalize the field. As parents, you have the same rights with the child decisions, but that does not make both parents equal in how good of a job you do as a parent.
In many of instances, when a man or woman is slapped, I notice that usually the woman is in the corner, and whether or not he or she is the instigator, her back is up against the wall. In which case, if he is the aggressor and slaps her, she is a victim. If she is the aggressor, it's usually a message to stop locking her in a corner. Men are also physically stronger. If a man is actually being abused (one slap doesn't count) then you have a valid point.
Men also have preferential treatment in the payroll department. A newbie male nurse still gets paid a little bit more than a female veteran of 20 years. It doesn't matter that it's only a dime, why is a rookie man getting more than a 20 yr. woman veteran? Why isn't he starting at base pay like other female nurses who are rookies? Yet you want to preach equality.
Forget it, you get epic fail.
The war on Women, children and families continues by the Republicans. They need sensitivity training. Also, they need to access all of their mental health benefits to get much needed counseling help to be able to relate to Americans and people in general. Until that happens, (I"m not holding my breath) I say vote them out of office at every opportunity in every state.
"Is this a case of governmental incompetence or something more sinister?"
More the latter, it seems to me. And the Sinister Something has happened to women already, once, five hundred years ago, that I know of, and who knows how many other times.
We need to study, and pay great attention to, what happened to Eleanor of Aquitaine and Anne Boleyn, and what happened to women during the time just between their lives and fates, and how it used to be for women for a few centuries before then.
The War on Women has happened before, maybe even is recurrent, and it takes us about five hundred years to climb out of the devastation the Brethren impose on us... and it looks like sending women back to the kitchen seems a favorite tactic through the ages. Are we going to let them win again?

Dan L.: ---- How about YOU carry a few pregnancies, then you can see "equal rights" on visitation and custody. It's egomaniacs like you who cause women to rethink sex and having children. That's why men have all got their undies in a bunch over women having choices and the right to vote, etc. It means we can leave abusive, dominating men like you.
