Dispatches From The War On Women: Happy Contraception Day!

Welcome to Dispatches, your round-up of the latest news from the frontlines of the War on Women. Have a story from your state or an idea on how to push back? Share them here and fight back against the War on Women.

Happy contraception day! Today eight provisions of Obamacare go into effect which means 47 million women will benefit from the guaranteed coverage of preventative services including contraception coverage without co-pays. This coverage will translate into real economic savings for women and families and marks the end of arbitrary price gouging in health insurance coverage on the basis of gender.

The Guttmacher Institute put together this video to help spread the word.

Try as they might but House Republicans just couldn’t muster up enough votes to pass their DC 20-week abortion ban.

Meanwhile women’s rights advocates are hoping the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will step in and enjoin Arizona’s 20 week ban from going into effect since it is now the wild west in the federal courts when it comes to abortion rights.

Unfortunately, there’s plenty of reason to think we’ll see more bad federal court decisions on abortion rights.

Personhood USA is asking the Supreme Court to intervene and put their personhood measure on the ballot in Oklahoma.

Do childfree couples have it all?

Another court rules DOMA unconstitutional. Hooray!

Here’s a compelling take on why we need new definitions of family.

What is “Christian” about denying a 3-year-old access to education because his parents are gay?

There is no shortage of impressive women competing in London, but British weightlifter Zoe Smith may be one of my new favorites.

And seriously. “Field hockey minxes?!”

Finally, is teaching “girl power” a good thing?

Thanks for checking back and don’t forget to send in your stories, suggestions and comments. We’ll be back each weekday with the latest in the best and the worst from the War on Women. So long as the battle rages, we’ll cover the latest, so please check back!

Yolanda, look up the HYDE AMENDMENT but you probably won't because it's a very inconvienent fact for people trying to feel indignant about abortion!

AMANDA M: you are correct. But neither do the rest of us who are pro-life and anti-contraception be forced to pay for your abortions or contraception. And we ARE forced to pay thru the federal government...so we DO have the right to our opinion...

"Here's a simple bit of advice for the anti-choicers and anti-contraception folks out there:

Against abortion? Don't have one.

Against contraception? Don't use it.

However, you have NO right to force the rest of us to live by your opinion/religion/etc. so knock it off already!

This is good news about birth control. I think that free contraception is a wise, just and responsible measure.

If we women drop the ball now in our attempt to secure our rights, then we are as much in danger of losing all rights as those women who have lost all and are stoned to death on trumped up charges.

We cannot allow our right to decide our future, which includes our reproductive rights, to slip from our fingers.

Jane, obviously you are on Medicare which I having been paying for you to have without complaint while paying taxes for much of my life in the top bracket. I seriously think you ought to have a heart and let the rest of the women in this country get the preventative care they need and I am not talking about poor women I am talking about all women who should be respected by the insurance companies that take their money but do not deliver proper care.Considering you claim to live in a state which is trying to close down all Planned Parenthood Clinics I have to wonder where women who are poor and do not have insurance will go for one of those free pap smears or any low kind of cost birth control? Troll does not begin to describe your presence here. I hope someday soon the women of Texas stop voting themselves back to the Dark Ages.
For the rest of us, today 8 important new ACA laws benefiting women kick in, Happy Contraception day indeed.
