Dog Protects Abandoned Baby

Dog Protects Abandoned Baby

A baby abandoned under a bridge in Ghana slept safely through the night, cuddled against the fur of her protector. The rescue dog belonged to a nearby farm. Somehow the pet found the infant and knew he should not be left alone.

The dog’s owner worried when her canine companion did not return home in the evening. A search party set out through fields and woods. Hours later they found the dog, curled around the baby.

The District Director of Health, Madam Rosemary Azure, told the Ghana New Agency (GNA) the abandoned baby was about two weeks old. His umbilical cord had been raggedly cut and had become infected. According to the GNA report:

She cautioned teenage girls against unprotected sex reasoning that the baby could have been abandoned by a teenager in view of the numerous reports of teenage pregnancies in the District.

Now the little one has been given medical treatment and vaccinations and is in care while police investigate. The dog has gained hero status for looking after the tiny baby until help could come.

No photos or descriptions of the dog or the baby have been released at this point, but the plucky canine showed a loving intelligence that is inspiring.

What an amazing hero,

The dog did great for the baby, but I have to say about one of the comments why do some Americans think they are the only people who have problems and care about helping out? Every country has both - I am English, live in Australia, & have travelled to many countries so I do know what I'm talking about.

Most animals have a compulsion to take care of young animals that need help, even if they are of a different species.

I wish people would actually read the entire story. This is not about a rescue dog rescuing a baby. Azaima A., the story says the dog's owner went looking for it when it did not come home and then found the dog protecting the baby. Kelly R., I really like your comment; I agree that Americans are ethnocentric and expect the rest of the world to be like us. Even with education, abandoning babies still happens in the US, too. It is so easy to judge...

Americans have zero perspective on the world. When some of you say, "the baby could’ve been taken to a hospital or police or fire station," you’re thinking about the US, NOT Ghana. Life’s VERY different there, especially for women.

You don't know if the baby was the product of rape - because in many cultures, even some in the US, females are pushed to have their rapist’s babies. Or incest. Regardless of the mother’s age or marital status, you have NO CLUE what would’ve happened to her if it was; her world's much more barbaric, misogynistic & violent than the relative civilized society in which you live.

How many of you are outraged because you claim to be religious, but it's really because you JUMPED TO CONCLUSIONS & JUDGED SOMEONE & A SITUATION YOU DON'T KNOW?

The dog’s a hero, but he's not exceptional - dogs are like that. See, the dog didn't get all bent out of shape about where the baby was supposed to be or who it was supposed to be with. He saw she needed protection & provided it. I know plenty of humans who don’t give one shake to do the same. They ignore people in need of protection & comfort, unconditional love, all the time. Conversely, dogs do these things every day - for humans, other dogs, other species - complete strangers. They don't ask, how did you get here, is it your own fault, why did you do that, or why should I do anything for you. They’re true Humanists.

Such a great story... if only people treated animals so well when they are found abandoned and helpless...
