End Animal Cruelty – With Style

42 comments End Animal Cruelty – With Style

Dogfighting. Puppy mills. There are too many examples of animal cruelty and abuse, and I’m tired of it.

I’m not alone. Dan Hoffman and Carrie Pollare, siblings and long time business partners, decided that they wanted to use their skills, experience and passion to do some good in the world. So they created “I’m Tired of…” bracelets to allow people who care to show their support for a cause while giving back, too.

Their idea is simple, based on Lance Armstrong’s successful LiveStrong bracelets. Offer the millions of people who care about animals and other causes a fun, fashionable, eco-friendly – the bracelets are made of recycled tires and metal – and inexpensive product that both spreads the word about the cause and generates a significant donation to the very folks working on the ground to end animal cruelty. We can change the world, one person and one bracelet at a time.

I’m wearing my “I’m Tired of Animal Cruelty” bracelet right now. And the staff of DogTown wears theirs every day. DogTown Manager John Garcia even showed up for his interview with Ellen DeGeneres sporting his bracelet. Half of the money from the sale of each “I’m Tired of Animal Cruelty” bracelet goes to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and their DogTown program.

You may have seen the DogTown show on National Geographic – past episodes have followed the journey of four of the most challenging dogs abused by Michael Vick as DogTown’s caring staff works to rehabilitate them and shown DogTown trainers helping singer Emmy Lou Harris get a “difficult” rescued dog ready for adoption.

DogTown animal behavior and training consultant Sherry Woodward says, “I proudly wear an ‘I’m Tired of Animal Cruelty’ bracelet every day – one more way to bring about awareness. When people ask about my bracelet, I talk with them about puppy mills, dog fighting, pet retention and proper care vs. abuse and neglect.”

The work that Best Friends and DogTown does to help rehabiliate abused and abandoned dogs is inspiring and heartwarming. You can show your support with a bracelet, too, or just watch a fun video about the cause – it’ll make you smile!

I cannot understand what fashion has to do with "Animal cruelty." But, I suppose if it makes one person ask, "What is this on your wrist?" and you can tell them what it means, maybe it makes "you" feel better. But I would have rather spent the money in saving more animal's than staring a fashion statement. I don't care about "fashion!"
I care about more about changing the law by increasing stiffer penaties. Prison time would be good. Let the abuser sit in a cage and wonder "Why are these people being me to me?"
Yes, Michael Vicks, I'm talking to you! You apologizing to the public was not about sincerity, you publiscist made you do it. ANd Whoopie, I love you, but standing by HIS side sickened me.

SO SAD!

maybe we should upscale the name of this to: Sick and Tired, Stop NOW !!!!!

I don't think that a bracelet about the abuse is a good fashion statement. The only thing that would be good if all the money would go to help these animals but a fashion statement no sure about that because if there are to many bracelets about everything than the people will wear them because of the different colors not what is said on the bracelet but that is the way I feel but I still wish I could find out where I could get one not because of the color but because what it says and how it will help the animals.

MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF THE ANIMALS BECAUSE THEY ARE GOD'S AND HE LOVES ALL OF HIS ANIMALS GREAT AND SMALL!!!

There is no excuse to hurt an animal.
All species have their rights, and the right to live in peace.

I didn't know these existed, but am not surprised. Not a bad idea! Wearing 'cause for' bracelets is a trend right now, so why not take advantage of the opportunity to spark a meaningful dialogue with a curious person on a topic dear to our hearts and souls. We may not be able to make sweeping changes regarding animal cruelty, but we can plant the seeds of consciousness in our own personal sphere of influence. That is called making a difference, albeit one step at a time!

If it comes to an either/or scenario, to feed or neuter your own pet, etc, then of course one must prioritize and rightly so!

But if we can make a statement, encourage dialogue, all the while contributing to a cause and someone who needs the assistance, then why not take advantage of this trend. You can wear it with a t-shirt, a business suit or work uniform.

I too am WAY more than sick and tired of the animal cruelty so pervasive among mankind, but if this will help just one person to gain a conscience when it comes to animal rights = one less precious creature to suffer, then count me in!

It would seem that wearing a special bracelet only has a slight potential, if even that, for doing anything to put animal cruelty in the conciousness of the broader society. And that is likely to happen only in isolated instances if someone is curious enough to ask you about your bracelet. One more thing. I mean no disrespect here, but the slogan "I'm tired of animal cruelty" seems rather lame. Do you think abused animals are tired of animal cruelty? I think they are terrified by animal cruelty. I'm not tired of animal cruelty. I'm horrified by animal cruelty. I'm tired of my noisy neighbors, traffic jams, parking meters that steal my change, people who ask me for change. But animal cruelty? Not so much.

(cont'd - sorry to be so long winded.) There is no significant difference in DNA values between humans, the horse, the dog, the cat, the golden hamster and the mouse - along with others. Even the creeping vole with the extremely low diploid chromosome number had a DNA value only 10 per cent lower,

If we realized that the creatures that we love so much are actually very intelligent, capable of humanitarian values, loving, and more intuitive than we are, perhaps our attitudes would change. No more speciesism! But we need to spread the word, starting in the early grades in elementary schools.

And I agree that it might be more productive to spend money on neutering, spaying, and supporting no-kill animal shelters, than on a bracelet that very few people are going to take the time to look at. A message T shirt would be cheaper (I think) .

Does anyone out there have other ideas as to how to spread the word? Make animal rights a chic, fashionable cause - and maybe Paris Hilton et al. will store their furs away and start campaigning against them!

(cont'd from previous posting) 2. Again, in the 1960's, we not only had modern black heroes like Martin Luther King, Jr., our educational system brought our attention to others, such as Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver. I think that our educational system should also call attention to animal heroes - such as those featured on the show, MIRACLE PETS. One of my favorites is the story of the cattle breeder who had a heart attack while in the pasture with his herd. A nasty bull came towards him, ready to do damage to his master. Almost immediately the cows formed a circle around the ailing man, while his dog ran to a neighbor's farm and dragged the neighbor to the pasture. The neighbor used his cell phone to call 911, and the man was saved. What would have happened to that man if the bull had been allowed to have his way?

I also think that genetics should be taught in science classes as well. If everyone was made aware of the fact that there is really little difference in the DNA of other mammals, people might think differently about them.

I agree that animal cruelty must be stopped, but as long as there are humans out there who are crazy or sick or just plain mean, that's going to be difficult. However, it can be greatly reduced if we take at least three courses of action - and some of you out there may be able to think of more. However, here's my two cents worth: 1. The legal penalties for cruelty to animals need to be greatly increased. A $25 is no deterrent at all. I would recommend paying restitution to the people who kept the animal, along with a prison term of at least five years with no possibility of parole. 2. In the 1960's, when I was growing up, I watched my very racist southern relatives go from blatant racism to tolerance to acceptance, because racism was transformed from the general attitude of everyone, even the nicest people, to a stigma implying ignorance and unkindness. We need to do the same where animals are concerned - and caring zoologists such as Dian Fossey have already laid the groundwork for this. We need to flood the media with TV shows such as MIRACLE PETS, and others. The Internet has already brought us a long way. Let's keep the momentum going.

Instead of wasting money on jewelry, how about using the money to spay or neuter an animal?
