As a new year rang in across the nation, a fire burned down the American Family Planning clinic in Pensacola, Florida — a fire that authorities immediately dubbed “suspicious.”
This isn’t the first act of violence the clinic has seen, or even the first act of violence conducted on a holiday. The clinic was firebombed on Christmas day in 1984, and the bombers served five years in jail before they were released. And two were killed and one wounded when an anti-abortion “protester” shot a doctor and escorts outside the clinic in 1994.
Arson at the clinic is just another reminder that as the debate over a woman’s right to chose gets more intense, and as more and more clinics are being shut down via over-regulation, defunding and other legal and legislative tactics, in the end there is still a faction of the “pro-life” community that would be willing to shut sites down with any means at their disposal, seeing acts of violence as justifiable in a war to “save the babies.”
As rhetoric from both sides heats up, and more people define being anti-abortion as protection of life at the moment of conception, even above the will or health of the mother, you can expect more acts of terrorism to pop up, as well.
