In a video released Wednesday by the National Organization for Marriage, former New York Giants receiver David Tyree cautions against marriage equality for same-sex partners. The Super Bowl star tells viewers that if New York’s State Senate passes the Assembly’s same-sex marriage legislation, it will “be the beginning of our country sliding toward … anarchy.”
Like many other opponents of LGBT equality, Tyree’s argument relies on standard conservative talking points such as false claims about parenting and strong religious bias.
When asked to clarify his statements on CNN, Tyree explains that “there’s no … moral fiber in a community” that allows same-sex marriage. A “one man and one woman” nuclear family, claims Tyree, is “the ideal … the way a family was intended to be.”
Same-sex partners raising children, Tyree adds, is “unnatural … I don’t think that’s a healthy model.”
Although Tyree asserts that he has “no interest in a theocracy,” he goes on to tell CNN that by legalizing same-sex marriage, “we are messing with something that God has ordained, set in order … marriage is holy, it’s something that is sacred.”
“We’re doing God an injustice by not making his heart known to our country,” he says in the NOM video.
