For Fox News, a “fair and balanced debate” seems to involve pitting an unreasonable, inaccurate conservative “expert” against a respected progressive figure. Poor Jehmu Greene, the former president of the Women’s Media Center, was on America’s Newsroom with Sandy Rios, the Vice President of Family PAC Federal, the “leading pro-family conservative political action committee in Illinois.” Their topic? The recent decision to require all insurers to cover birth control and other women’s health services without co-pays.
Greene put forward all of the reasons why access to birth control is crucial for women, explaining that the move was a “text-book definition of win-win.” Rios, however, lambasted the policy change as “la-la land,” saying,
“Is the White House out of their mind? Does the West Wing not know what the left wing is doing? We have $14 trillion in debt and now we’re going to cover birth control, breast pumps, counseling for abuse? Are we going to do pedicures and manicures as well?”
She then went on to compare the United States to “Red China,” and railed against the “uncontrolled sexual behavior” that birth control access would produce. Clearly, Rios is on the same page as Bill O’Reilly, who recently declared that most women are “blasted out of their minds” while having sex.
Greene responds to Rios gracefully and far more reasonably than I would have been able to do. But if this is the future of “fair and balanced debate” — well, I’m pretty terrified.
