Listen to Ahmed’s story as the gay Iraqi tells how six of his uncles planned an honor killing against him, how a judge told him he was a disgrace to Muslim culture, and how a jail guard attempted to rape him.
A new wave of violence against Iraq’s LGBT population was reported at the beginning of March, with at least 42 gay men having been killed. Later reports suggest that some of those men were killed for being “emo” or “metrosexual”.
A similar wave of violence against LGBT citizens in Iraq was widely reported in 2009, but since then it had been hoped Iraq’s officials would have ensured local agencies were protecting citizens. As Ahemd’s story shows, this does not seem to be the case.
