The January edition of the long-running Archie Comic series featuring gay character Kevin Keller, who first appeared two years ago, getting wed to his African American boyfriend, Clay Walker, has sold out in stores say the comic’s creators.
This is despite hate group-affiliated One Million Moms protesting Toys ‘R’ Us for stocking the comic book in selected stores.
Via the official Archie Comics blog:
Archie Comics, the home to some of the world’s most recognizable characters — including Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica, Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch — is proud to announce that the company has sold out of LIFE WITH ARCHIE #16.
The issue, which has received widespread media attention around the world, including coverage from ABC NEWS, CNN, REUTERS, THE HUFFINGTON POST, GAWKER, THE DRUDGE REPORT, THE NEW YORK TIMES, PEREZHILTON.com, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, THE ADVOCATE, OUT MAGAZINE, FOX NEWS and more, features a historic moment for Kevin Keller, the first gay character in Riverdale: He gets married.
“Kevin will always be a major part of Riverdale, and we’re overjoyed, honored and humbled by the response to this issue,” said Jon Goldwater, Co-CEO of Archie Comics. “Our fans have come out full force to support Kevin. He is, without a doubt, the most important new character in Archie history. He’s here to stay.”
The blog also highlights that the comic is now available for download for those who want to get their hands on a copy.
One Million Moms, who previously kicked up a fuss about Ellen DeGeneres being a spokesperson for J.C. Penny, protested that the comic would introduce children to themes they are not ready for and would lose Toys ‘R’ Us many conservative customers. So far Toys ‘R’ Us has refused to budge on the issue.
Over 700 people have signed a Care2 petition thanking Toys ‘R’ Us for stocking the comic. If you haven’t signed, please consider doing so.
TAKE ACTION: Say thanks to Toys ‘R’ Us for carrying the ‘Just Married’ Archie comic.

@ June L --- You're offended? I am offended that you are a mother passing on your bigotry to your child, perpetuating the bigoted treatment of others.
Kudos to Archie Comics!

You're offended. So what? Being offended doesn't mean you're right.
