What does the Map of the New Green Economy Look Like? (Care2 Video Interview)
posted by: Heather H. 249 days ago

Green jobs has been a huge buzzphrase for some time now. But what exactly are green jobs? How do we define them? And where are the companies who are already creating green jobs and green products? We sat down with our friends at Environmental Defense Fund to talk about their new interactive Google map that identifies in 12 states where the green jobs of the future are already showing up. These are companies that will benefit from a cap on allowable carbon pollution – they represent the innovation that the Obama Administration is betting heavily on to help revive the American economy. They like it so much that they invited EDF’s CEO Fred Krupp to join Vice President Biden today in Philadelphia for a panel during the first meeting of the VP’s Middle Class Task Force.
Jackie Roberts, the Director of Sustainable Technology shared with us the evolution of the research on the growth potential for companies that invest in the green revolution, some great examples of companies that are already creating jobs, and the challenges in passing meaningful cap-and-trade legislation. The first video outlines the cool (yes, it’s really very cool) Google map EDF created. You can choose a state and even cities (with plans to add about 10 additional states). And we’ll be adding a second video later that outlines the argument for a cap-and-trade policy to address climate change, who will be fighting against it, and how Care2 members can help pass what we need.

Hey Dena.
And, what's there is just the beginning. They rolled out with 12 states, but they do have data on most others as well and will be adding. We'll keep you posted!

Glad to see Jacksonville Florida is posted on the map for green jobs! The more resources that are available to help companies and people understand the opportunities, definition of green jobs and where to find them - the sooner we can all start making a difference!

Hi Sandra.
In terms of Canada, I have actually heard about this issue. Have you thought about reaching out to Environmental Defense Canada? (http://www.environmentaldefenceca.com). I'm sure there are other large environmental groups too. Maybe the David Suzuki foundation could have some good resources?

No more coal!! Instead, solar and wind power generating aperati can be built and placed on mountain tops that have already been destroyed. This would be a tremendous boost for the Appalachian economies. This can also be done to metropolitan rooftops and building facades. We have done damage and we can fix it.
Apartment complexes can, in a Gilligan's Island kind of way, reduce grid demands by having fitness facilities with workout stations connected to power generating sources. What a boost to the enegry situation and to the fitness of the American people.
I am not that scientifically minded, so I can only imagine and speculate the possibilities that can be developed by young brilliant minds looking for work now.

Wow - what an eye opener for details in opportunities in the green market. Sharing this info that things are possible to save our resources I hope will stir companies to get going in making changes - we just need to act.

The current in funding for the environment and green jobs is fantastic. However, we have to make sure that the job and green markets stay around once the financial stimulus money runs out.
One way to do this is to adopt a strategy like the one proposed by Henderson in a recent book. See http://www.wavesofthefuture.net/ for details.
His approach would lead to a rapid expansion of green markets, which would sustain environmental jobs for the long term.

when things are done well.. I think there shouldn´t be limits among counties. And this is a good , excellent idea to promote in other counties.

This is a great interview, and an AMAZING resource for states! I can't wait until I see California's map of green jobs - I'm sure we have tons.
