Greece’s Front Line Protest Dog – VIDEO

Greece’s Front Line Protest Dog – VIDEO

In the midst of teargas and riots in Greece earlier this week, with protestors fed up with austerity and the deep recession, there is a new hero: a dog!

The dog, thought to be a stray called Loukanikos, or Sausage, has apparently been in the centre of Greek protest action for years.

And here he is, filmed last Wednesday, June 15, at the front line when Greek police fired teargas at protesters outside Parliament.

Check out this amazing dog here:

Amazing Loukanikos!

I hope the facebook posting that Loukanikos is currently in temporary custody of animal welfare volunteers in Athens is true and that he will be taken care of. I think he is being reactive and following the example of the rioters who are the ones who are feeding him.

The answer to the question is: both, so I voted "yes." The dog has found in the past, and again now, that it's fun to be where the action is. Yea Loukanikos!

There is no answer to the question. Amazing dog! I hope that someone will adopt him.

It's been a while but when I was there I couldn't save any as I was also on the streets as a long-term traveler without a home; but it wasn't one or two, but tens upon tens of dogs I came across daily or weekly. The loose ones were homeless and in packs, begging for food from tourists (please ffed them while there!). It was the rest that saddened me, the many hundreds in yards chained to barrels with no water, no vet care, no grooming, left out there to 'make noise' as a security system, that I most remember and grieve, and will never forget. Please help educate the Greek populous about humane animal care.

An update on Loukanikos.
I am assuming you have all be following the escalation of rioting in Greece, as Prime Minister Papandreou accepts the bailout packages and subsequently imposes further austerity measures on the already demoralised and economically suffering people of Greece. Like many of you, I watch televison footage of the Athens riots and look closely to see if Loukanikos is amongst the rioters. Last week he was there, weaving his way through the feet of protesters. This week he was nowhere to be seen and many following him on his facebook have been concerned as to his whereabouts and safety. Today's posting from his facebook administrators advise that Loukanikos is currently in temporary custody of animal welfare volunteers in Athens and will be kept out of harm's way, during this very dangerous week of rioting.

Shelly,
Loukanikos has also reached Wikipaedia status and has been widely discussed by the BBC as well as other canine behavioural experts. There are some well meaning people on this blogg who deem the dog incapable of knowing what he is barking about: that he is just making noise. For years animal behavioural scientists and animal activitists (of which I am one) have expounded the theory that dogs are amongst the most intelligent animals and we have seen countless examples of dogs taking initiative in some of the most amazing feats, yet people cannot credit this dog with enough intelligence to know why he chooses to participate in the Athens riots. Dogs are incredibly loyal and protective of their masters - in this case the rioters who look after him and has enough intelligence to understand the police, to be the aggressors. Loukanikos (in Greek "sausage") is preceeded by Canellos ("Cinamon") the other famous riot-dog, who passed away in 2008 - of old age!
