Chinese dog owners must choose which pet to save, which will be taken

Chinese dog owners must choose which pet to save, which will be taken

It’s not a great time to be a dog in China. Over 36,000 dogs were recently killed in response to a rabies outbreak – including both strays and pets. And now, families living with more than one dog in Guangzhou, China have until July 1 to eliminate all but one dog.

It’s awful to imagine picking between family members – the sort of thing that used to terrorize me when going to sleep as a young girl. But in this region of China, many families are about to make tough choices.

It might not seem that extreme in a country that restricts the number of children you can have. And, many regions of China have long required one-dog policies for Chinese families. Still, imposing the restriction on families now, without “grandfathering in” existing intact families seems particularly cruel.

City officials have declined to discuss their reasons, but some reporters guess that the new middle class in this region has made matters difficult by allowing un-neutered dogs loose in the streets, causing overpopulation problems. The Associated Press also reports that Guangzhou is preparing to host the Asian Games next year, and crews have been scrubbing down and sprucing up the city of 12 million people. Perhaps the idea is cleaner sidewalks?

If officials can so easily catch dogs and whisk them off to death, it certainly leaves me wondering if they might just as easily fine people for failure to collect their dog waste. I mean huge fines – the kind that make one look over one’s shoulder every time your dog squats. In fact, I kind of wish the U.S. would implement a similar crackdown on dog waste. It seems wrong that I need to collect not just my dog’s poo, but that of the annoyingly irresponsible dog walkers who litter my local trails so I can keep my children clean.

I digress. In any event, I wonder what these families are going to do. Will they hide their dogs? Walk them separately so it appears as though they have only one? What would you do?

enough said. as for the rubbish about "some reporters guess that the new middle class in this region has made matters difficult by allowing un-neutered dogs loose in the streets, causing overpopulation problems", then why not just say 'you can have a dog/s but they HAVE to be neutered. if they're not neutered, then you have to surrender them. problem solved.

No one should have to make a choice like this. Because of China's lack of constructive laws, it is hurting innocent animals & many more people will die. No doubt, god is punishing these people for their evil ways & breaking god's law anyway. These people just do not seem to understand that when you eat an animal, it does not transfer any type of power or affect onto them except rabies & other types of deadly infections. So, i say, let them all die off slowly but surly. Once most all the evil people are gone, then the threat will be gone.

i am affraid that what you say is just as true as in every country arround the world....china is no more or no less than others..this is happening in other countries too..and regarding rabies vaccine, i guess ur wrong..again, rabies is a serious treat and it has no cure..so i doubt that authorities in china are that stupid not to use them...or to club vaccined dogs....and yes, education is a wonderful thing...think of that...

Daniela. I recommend you do some research into China and how its treats animals there. It is the ONLY country in the world that had NO animal welfare laws at all. There is plenty of footage of dogs being skinned alive and cats being thrown into boiling water alive. China also refused help from outside organisations to have a vaccine programme set up against rabies as they would rather club dogs to death. They even club the ones that have been through the vaccine programme. Education is a wonderful thing,

people, cool down a bit..china is an ancient civilisation, which deserves respect!!!! i remind ya that theyr population is a quarter of the earth one..so it is logical that they eat all it crawls..they treat dogs as we treat cattle...i do agree that they don't need to kill all the dogs..but rabies is a serious disease and has no cure!!!!! i do love dogs...and i feel sorry for the ones who died..but under such treat..

These people are control freaks. They are very mentally ill toward animals and children exspecially, but imagine to everyone. These people need to get on medicine for their chemicle inbalance in their brains. The dogs turned away will be torcherd by these sick minded people making the laws up. These sick people need taken out back and shot and beaten, burned etc.Their culture is unexcuseable and should not be tolorated!Maybe they all need severe shock treatment.A bunch of control FREAKS!

China is ran by cruel and ruthless people.I read an article in the Readers Digest years ago on the way they kill their newborn baby girls. It is no surprise what they do to animals, no living specie means anything to them.
We need to keep our country from becoming like China...

China is a country that is hell on earth. They have such a deep layer of evil and meaness running thru, it can't be removed. Life, any life, means absolutely nothing to them. In the way, kill it; doesn't agree with the government, kill it; hungry, eat the dog/cat/bird. This race of people are brutal, barbaric, cruel and that's the nice things I can think of! To poison their own people (powdered milk, tainted food) is a disgrace, yet they did it and for what? Money. Greed, my friends, greed. And as long as the government gets their share(thru bribes of course)they could give a damn. People are outraged at the callous and inhumane treatment of China's pets, but look at Korea. In Korea, they torment and torture dogs with a slow death before they eat them! Also a cruel and barbaric country. What can be done, nothing. There are too many of them and our western standards do not apply to their customs. The best we can do is boycott everything coming out of Asia. Included are the whale killers of Japan. Disgusting!
