Rosanne Cash Tells Colbert to Sign on to Close Gitmo Now Campaign . . . And He Does! (VIDEO)
posted by: Heather H. 27 days ago

Last week the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo launched in an effort to organize progressives around President Obama's call to Close the detention facilities at Guantanamo, a symbol of torture known around the world. The campaign included a coalition of 20 musicians including Rosanne Cash, David Byrne, REM and Pearl Jam who joined the cause when they learned that music had been used to torture detainees (think music at ear-splitting level for hours on end--it could be Patsy Cline and it would still permanently damage your hearing).
Last night, Stephen Colbert hosted Grammy winner Rosanne Cash to talk about why she joined the campaign and asked him to sign a letter agreeing with Colin Powell that Gitmo should be closed. And he did it!

Michael "Bruce V, I don't want the prisoners in my back yard, but if they are transferred to the US they won't be in my back yard. They will be locked up. What kind of stupid fear-mongering question is that, anyway?
More important (vastly, unequivocally more important) is the fact that we are quashing the rights of human beings - rights upon which this country was founded. Yes, those locked up at Guantanamo may have committed nefarious acts and may want to continue hurting innocent citizens of the world, but they still should be given a trial - before we lock them up"
Ok Michael - we give them all trials and some are found not guilty - where do you release them? Do we make them US citizens or do we put them on a plane back to the Country they came from where they could die?
If they are found not guilty - would you open up your door to them or wnat them living next to you?

I want to thank Michael M. and Stuart L. for giving me more to think about. Both are right in their assessment that closing Gitmo won't change the fact that the "prisoners" have been held illegally in an illegal war..

Michael M. hit the nail on the head, and I just want to support what he wrote. What's the big deal in closing Guantanamo if you are going to keep people incarcerated without a trial? If there is no trial, there probably is no evidence to convict. These two wars are illegal. Would Congress declare war against these two countries today? No, only right after a terrorist attack when emotions were high and Democrats were afraid to look "soft". The Constitution says that Congress must declare war, not the President. We were attacked on 9/11/01, and Bush said that we are going to war against terrorism. How can you go to war against sporadic acts? If we go to war, it should be because some country, not some cell, or terrorist organization, is threatening our country. We have been shooting blindly. We cannot win in Afghanistan or Iraq because we have not defined what winning means. That's why we lost in Viet Nam. These are open-ended wars, with no end in sight. Bush had us hate Osama bin Laden. To get a country riled up enough to support a war, you have to have an object to hate. Bush had no proof that Osama was responsible for 9/11, except that he himself claimed credit. Why not? It was a great victory for those who hate the U.S. But still, no proof, just what Bush and Tony Blair told us. Back to torture and incarceration without trial, when I was growing up and we were fighting WWII, we always said that we were not like our enemies, but better than them.
Can we sa

A grand stand for these folks. Guantanamo truly is one big black eye for the states, and as long as it is still operational, we are no longer that country that sits atop the hill for other nations to look up to for moral guidance.
I'm really beginning to tire of people's whiney complaints, that they don't wont the terrorists in their backyards. Don't they know by now there are already over 250 terrorists incarcerated in US prisions and with the advanced security, most apparently don't even know this, for their staying put...they can't escape...
In fact a Montana prison facility with state of the art security is begging to hold the terrorists, as it would bring jobs and make the prison operational.
Quit bringing fear tactics into the equation.
CLOSE DOWN GUANTANAMO...

If you watch some of his earlier work on "Strangers With Candy", you can see that that was the beginning of this "Newscaster" character he portrays on The Colbert Report. On that show (SWC) he portrayed a closeted homosexual with a conservative facade.
His comedic timing and shtick are pure genius! It's hilarious to note that some right wing conservatives are so naive as to think he is promoting their stance when, in fact, they are the butt of everyone of his jokes. Brilliant! Keep up the good work, Stephen Colbert!
