Hundreds Occupy Wall St. In Protest Of Broken Financial System

Inspired by citizen uprisings around the world, thousands of regular Americans recently descended on Wall Street to protest a U.S. economic system that wastes taxpayer money to coddle corporations and stock brokers.

Vowing to ”occupy Wall Street” and to “bring justice to the bankers,” these people exercised their right to march on the head of Wall Street and form a spontaneous blockade, prompting the New York Police Department to threaten arrest.

Undeterred, protesters walked laps around the area before holding a people’s assembly and setting up a semi-permanent protest encampment in a park on Liberty Street, a stone’s throw from Wall Street and a block from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (Guardian).

That was Saturday, September 17th. Three days later, the occupation of Wall Street is still going strong, with hundreds choosing to spend the night sleeping on the street only to be greeted by reinforcements each morning.

So far, celebrity presence at the protest has not been lacking. Speakers including the Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping, and actress Rosanne Barr spoke on the steps of the American Indian Smithsonian Museum to the crowd, which included conscious rappers Lupe Fiasco and Immortal Technique.

“Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America,” states the OccupyWall website. “We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.”

The original call for this occupation was published by Adbusters in July; since then, many individuals across the country have stepped up to organize this event, such as the people of the NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage. There will also be similar occupations in the near future such as October 2011 in Freedom Plaza, Washington D.C.

We need to focus on create jobs OUR COUNTRY IS RUNNING OUT OF FRESH WATER AND WE NEED JOBS. We can not ignore the problems of our short comings in understanding of fresh water and the need of it. We need it now! Flooding is the killer! Man’s ignorance is overwhelming! Yet we ignore it and this fresh water is gone forever. We must act 2 kick start jobs. PETITION

I believe the time has come to define [Occupy American Movement]. This is the voice of the 99% of Americans to stand up for jobs. We must stand up for the middle class and the poor. Wake-up the DEMOCRATIC SLEEPING GIANT!! Voice out to create jobs. We must form new unions so that we can bargain for fair wages, keep Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Tax the wealthy 1% Wall Street, banks, big business, oil, jet setters. Let them pay their fair share. Not to put on the backs of the working middle class and the poor. We can not carry the tax weight alone. Stop the radical Tea Party that is undermining our country, Middle class and the poor. Show we are one!
They can try to stop our movement from pulling our economy out of this recession and defeat us, but it will not work. We must stand up for President Obama and re-elect. If the Republicans win the Presidency, we can and will get the same political stance as we have been getting. Stop the extremist GOP Tea Party’s greed. Vote out the Tea Party extremist. Vote Democrat. We believe in the rights of the working middle-class and the poor? We can march on our Capital. Stand against the extremist that are trying to take our way of life from us. The criteria and stance of the Tea Party is asking for it all, will no compromise. They will never get the total package with out compromise. We can not do the same as the Tea Party’s radical demand of a total package and try to bring down our government. We must stop the Tea

Where do politicians stand on all issues? They stand wherever they need to in order to get elected. They don't really care about other people they just want power. If we vote them in they're supposed to do what we want them to do, not what they feel like doing. They're not supposed to be our kings and queens, or celebrities, they are supposed to be our elected servants. And the money that they are playing about with is ours! Not theirs! I will say this again and again until I hear the echoes of it all over the world. "I will not be happy until a computer takes a politicians job! Just like everyone else. There are way too many of them. And if everyone else can be replaced by computers why not them? They are awful! If I work in a job and mess up I will get sacked. But these smirking sneering unnacountables get away with it all the time.
When we start voting for Policy's and not politicians, I think better decisions will be made. ...alright! It's not as if they could be worse!

Finally a ligitimate alternative to the Tea party for people who are fed-up with government not doing its job. These people are suffering from being under-reported, why can't Care2 keep them on the front page for a while? I saw this in an e-mail from Care2 but had a hard time finding it on the web-site. I plan to take this group's new list of demands to my local community here in Florida. I would like to green star several of the comments here but I am new to this site and don't have any friends yet so they won't let me.

Actually the cops should join them. With the corpotocracy now targeting all unions, including those of policemen, teachers, and firemen it should really be we the people vs. the speculative financial complex.
