Democrats are finally showing some political savvy and using all tools at their disposal to block or weaken the flurry of anti-woman, anti-choice bills. In Illinois, this means passing poison-pill amendments to kill a mandatory ultrasound bill.
Amendments to the ultrasound bill were approved in committee and would tighten the regulations on who can perform ultrasounds; require disclosure of the cost of the ultrasound; extend the ultrasound requirement to dozens of other medical procedures; tie insurance coverage of erectile dysfunction medication to that of birth control pills; and require counseling for men seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction.
State Rep. Joe Lyons, (R), the original sponsor of the bill is not pleased with the amendments now tied to the bill as means his bill is dead.
The beauty of these poison-pill amendments is that they take the rhetoric fueling the ultrasound bills at its face and in doing so exposes the true hypocrisy in the anti-choice position here. These bills are not “protecting” women, or “educating” or doing anything else other than controlling. And the fact that the bill will now fail is all the proof needed on that point.
