Infographic: The World’s Cutest Killer

A new study shows that domestic cats are such feisty hunters, they actually kill a ton of wildlife. One cat, infamously known as Tibbles, was single-handedly responsible for the destruction of an entire species of bird. Read the whole story here.

My kitties love to kill and I love to watch them....

not really but I knew it would excite some....

I live in an area that at one time was infested with rats. Several years ago, the city tore down many buildings that had the rodents but didnt do anything about 'them'. So they just moved to the next neighborhood, where I am now. The cats dod a good job of keeping the rodent populations down and its better than having rats crawl over you in your sleep.

@ John W.

"When we had John Howard as Prime Minister in Australia he was going to outlaw the cat for the damage it does. ..."

Remembering the documentaries "Home" and "Earthlings" (you can watch them on youtube), I think that John Howard stated a great example.

I just wish non human species could put the same rules on humans in order to protect their habitat and birds.

By the way, the birds a cat is able to catch are mainly injured or sick ones (ever heard of secondary poisoning?).
Unlike humans, cat has no chance to use a rifle in order to kill healthy birds nor does it use poison.

to continue my cut of comment for John W.

...
Did I mentioned road kills, animals drowning in swimming pools (because ppl are too lazy to cover it when not used or to install an emergency exit for trapped animals),

I just remembered an act of animal cruelty people even pay to view or bet on.
Ever heard of bull fighting, horse races - it's a big market.
You think dressage is more animal friendly?? Do a research on "rollkur" or hyperflexion.
It's as if you have to do gymnastics with your chin tied on your chest.

Did I talked about all the animals dying on our waste? Especially plastic kills millions of especially sea birds each year. Watch the documentary "A message in the waves"
Oh yeah, and those animals suffocating on plastic bags or plastic rings (of ie. six-packs) growing into their neck.

Correct me if I am wrong, but before we humans should blame animals for "killing for not a good reason" we should mind our own business.

@ John W.
"The house cat is evil it kills for fun, not food it plays with it's victim untill it dies then it leaves it alone."

The average house cat needs to train it skills in order to be able to survive outside if it gets abandoned by it's owners because it became inconvenient, "too epensive", or just because it grew out if it's kitten paws and is less adorable as an adult cat.

Humans instead kill for real fun, they call it "sport".

The average house cat would eat it's prey. If the average house cat leaves its prey i,e. at the back door, it provides fresh food for its owner. It's the feline version of a gift because a cat is unable to buy a gift to say thank you to its owner.

The average human will use the skin of an animal to dress (leather and fur clothing, ...), for accessoires (leather and fur handbags, belts, home decoration, ...)
Or would you eat raccoon, skunk, coyote, bear, snake, lizard, ...

Cats seem to play with their prey until it dies and if they leave it alone it's most likely a shrew mouse.
The average human tends to throw meat away if he think it's not good enough for him to eat, overcooked, undercooked, tough, too spicy, ... Not to talk about the tons of meat discarded each day in grocery stores due to expiring "best before", the tons of by-catch in fishing industry, male chicken in egg production, male calves (50 % of all born calves are an unprofitable side product of dairy industry).

One more. The picture of the kitty is intended to make it look vicious;. to me, it looks like a cat in mid yawn.

John W.
If I die in my house and my cat eats me to survive, I won't/don't care. You know why? 'Cause I'll be DEAD!
Your dogs will starve because they are so dependent on humans to feed them.
Wild dogs will eat you because they are used to fending for themselves to survive.

In the 1300's rats were brought to Europe on ships from Asia. In Europe, cats were thought to be witches or witches familiars and were outlawed and killed. The rats from Asia brought Bubonic (Black) plague that killed one third of the European population, about 34,000,000 people. People who kept pet cats, illegally, fared better because their cats killed the rats who carried fleas that carried the Plague. When the powers that be finally caught on, cats were allowed to live and breed and actually became 'heroes' that ended the Plague.
All you people that think cats are evil and should be killed would have died. By-the-way, no animal is 'evil'. The only creatures on earth who have that ability are humans.
Just sayin'.

OK, 73 animals are killed each second by a house cat .... so what?

dying animals per second by humans:
over 3000 in slaughterhouses - the animal kill counter visualizes those numbers.
at least 22 in test labs (results are not transferable to humans - aerzte gegen tierversuche)
about 100 in hunting
about 2 for their fur
that equals in approx 3124 animal per second by humans
plus
about 4 tons of fish each second

Not to talk about roadkill, poaching, deforestation, environment pollution and animal cruelty victims...

Therefore I would say cage the humans - it's better for mother nature.

If you have a cat, you should keep it in the house. Cats can get very sick from other free range cats
