Iowa GOP Pushes Yet Another Medicaid Abortion Ban
Since they were not successful in earlier attempts to ban Medicaid coverage for abortions in cases of rape or incest, Iowa Republicans have decided to try to circumvent the legislature and get a ban in any way they can.
Robin Marty reports that a group of 41 Republican representatives filed a petition requesting emergency rulemaking that would halt all Iowa government-paid abortions in cases of rape and incest. The petition cites state law to argue that rules allowing for abortions paid by Medicaid in cases of fatal fetal anomaly and those conceived in cases of rape or incest are illegal and should be rescinded.
The state now has until August 10 to respond to the petition. The state could dismiss it or move forward with the rulemaking process. This would include going through the state’s Administrative Rules Review Committee, which has 10 Iowa Senate or House members and is equally divided by Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
There is something disturbing about Iowa Republican lawmakers singular obsession with this issue. In the past 12 months there have only been 2 cases of Medicaid covering abortions for rape victims in Iowa, yet lawmakers were prepared to shut down the state government to prevent aid going to these victims. And now they are willing to bypass the legislative process to do the same.
