Iowa GOP Pushes Yet Another Medicaid Abortion Ban

Iowa GOP Pushes Yet Another Medicaid Abortion Ban

Since they were not successful in earlier attempts to ban Medicaid coverage for abortions in cases of rape or incest, Iowa Republicans have decided to try to circumvent the legislature and get a ban in any way they can.

Robin Marty reports that a group of 41 Republican representatives filed a petition requesting emergency rulemaking that would halt all Iowa government-paid abortions in cases of rape and incest. The petition cites state law to argue that rules allowing for abortions paid by Medicaid in cases of fatal fetal anomaly and those conceived in cases of rape or incest are illegal and should be rescinded.

The state now has until August 10 to respond to the petition. The state could dismiss it or move forward with the rulemaking process. This would include going through the state’s Administrative Rules Review Committee, which has 10 Iowa Senate or House members and is equally divided by Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

There is something disturbing about Iowa Republican lawmakers singular obsession with this issue. In the past 12 months there have only been 2 cases of Medicaid covering abortions for rape victims in Iowa, yet lawmakers were prepared to shut down the state government to prevent aid going to these victims. And now they are willing to bypass the legislative process to do the same.

I don't want my tax dollars going to a corporation that has so much profit. I want it to go for important things like teachers, police, firemen...

The Republicans claim that the "War on Women" does not exist but they can't help themselves. They are like a bunch of horny pedophiles at a day care facility. They have no control over themselves.

Carole L., Real men who believe in equal rights for all will remember too. It must be a terrible life for those who are so afraid of the opposite sex they feel a need to try and control them in any way possible and denigrate their religion by dragging it through the mud with them.

Carol O., I guess all of us idiots here in Iowa aren't just out wandering around...but keep up those comments, they do so much to further a cause.

Barb H., you are correct in guessing that they are all insane but the worse part is that they are dangerously insane and have a leader here in congressman steve king who is the embodiment of all that is wrong with the tea party and the republicans.

“With abstinence,nothing else is needed..”

Yeah, that works great in cases of rape, molestation, or incest. You want to be abstinent, knock yourself out… Ignorant buffoon.

“John M- WTF! are you living in a cave or under a rock of some sort?!”

Maybe he’s a eunuch.

So, how many jobs does this legislation create?

Okay, ladies and gents (and you may quote me), all together now;
Come November, women will remember

John, unfortunately, expresses himself badly. I've read many of his comments before and I've never seen him say he would forbid abortion in these cases. He is, however, a big fundamentalist when it comes to people taking responsibility for their own actions when they are irresponsible.

On this, I concur..

Its never been about abortion. It is about conservative's wanting to control and punish women.
