Lane Bryant’s Plus-Size Lingerie Commercial Gets Censored by Networks

280 comments Lane Bryant’s Plus-Size Lingerie Commercial Gets Censored by Networks

While Victoria Secret’s scantily clad models – most recently “The Nakeds” –seductively strut, prance, and dance in barely-there bras and panties in commercials across your TV screens, other models are not given the same freedom.

A new commercial for Lane Bryant’s new lingerie line, Cacique, has been censored by Fox and ABC, both of which eventually agreed to air the commercial only in the final moments of “Dancing with the Star” and “American Idol” – Fox agreeing only after Lane Bryant threatened to pull the ad buy.

Lane Bryant took to their blog with their outrage:

“It appears that ABC and Fox have made the decision to define beauty for you by denying our new, groundbreaking Cacique commercial from airing freely on their networks.”

“We knew the ads were sexy, but they are not salacious.  Our new commercials represent the sensuality of the curvy woman who has more to show the world than the typical waif-like lingerie model. What we didn’t know was that the networks, which regularly run Victoria’s Secret and Playtex advertising on the very shows from which we’re restricted, would object to a different view of beauty.  If Victoria’s Secret and Playtex can run ads at any time during the 9pm to 10pm hour, why is Lane Bryant restricted only to the final 10 minutes?”

I’ll tell you why. Because we live in a world where beauty is narrowly defined as being thin and slender. Anything else is simply unacceptable. Sure, print magazines have made strides in incorporating plus-size models in various magazines, but this a giant step backwards.

One of the networks even claimed that the woman in Lane Bryant’s commercial has “too much cleavage.” It’s a lingerie commercial. Isn’t cleavage the point? And why are Victoria’s Secret models allowed to have cleavage but plus-size models aren’t?

Take a look at the offending commercial yourself:

What do you think? Too much cleavage or skin? Not any more than a Victoria’s Secret commercial – that’s for sure.

So, why the unfair treatment? Are plus-size women not allowed to be sexy or wear lingerie? They should and do and I’m glad Lane Bryant has created a line of lingerie for the fuller figured woman. Now we just need the networks to follow suit.

Do you think the commercial should be censored?

Omg!!! I don't come from a family that solely relies on the forced portrayal of beauty so I can easily look and see she's beautiful as well as tasteful. I wonder if the men that are outraged are even attracted to women since they're mad over this. As for the women who are outraged I wonder if they have their own fears and insecurities to deal with. I think it's a case of the "beauty/fashion" industry freaking out because god forbid any of us think for ourselves as far as beauty because THEY are the only ones that can define it. Give me break!!!

They show more skin in a Hawaiian Tropic Suntan lotion ad than in this one... It is plain that plus sized folks are the seemingly the last group in America that can be discriminated against... Insult or commit some sort of affront against a gay person or a black person and the wrath of the gods fall on your head. Do the same to a heavy person and nobody seems to find fault with that in the main stream media. It is very sad indeed....

Sensors on ".Dancing with the Stars" where all the womens outfits are almo0st nothing....now there is are real hypocrites....wow. I don't even watch the show anymore. but there were practically naked then. So what difference does it make they show older dancers, youngers one and then Lan Bryant, and it was not like she had flab haing out all over either.... We are a sick society these days. It is all about sex...and has been only about the skinny ones for decades, but in real life, we all have sex anyway....so what difference does it really make?

who decided against the commercial? A bunch of guys in a 3 piece suit or were there any women involved? Men have dictated womens fashions, and morals, for centuries.

And despite this being a "plus-sized" model, she's no where near as big and voluptuous as the average American woman! The television / movie industry is making noises about being more open to more realistic portrayals of women's sizes, but banning this commercial just shows that they aren't putting their money where their mouths are....

Man you people are something else. This country has more fat people than anywhere in the world. We over eat over consume use 30% of the worlds recourses. Do any of you think about what the effect fat people has on our planet. Your clothes are bigger so it take more fabric your cars are bigger because you can't fit in a small car. You over eat, eat too much meat, you poop more, have more wast can't ride up a hill or walk up a flight of stairs. Aircraft use much more fuel to carry your fat around, cars burn more fuel. Need air conditioning because fat gets very hot. Just think about how much fat is wasting energy in more ways than you can imagine. I am tiered of hearing your whining about making yourselves fat like I am suppose to feel sorry for you. No i don't you made yourselves that way no one shoved that double cheese burger down your throat. Get a life, walk around stop eating, drink some water not a soda, do something! Oh think of what fat is costing in healthcare.
