Maine Reinstates Same Day Voter Registration

It turns out Mainers like same-day voter registration, and they like it by a wide margin. By a spread of about 60%-40% voters rejected a bill that eliminated the 38-year-old practice in a race that, despite its implications for other Republican-backed anti-voting measures largely flew under the radar.

In June, the Republican-controlled House and Senate voted largely along party lines to pass LD 1376, An Act To Preserve the Integrity of the Voter Registration and Election Process. As passed, LD 1376 required voters to register two business days before an election and banned absentee voting two days before Election Day, though that provision of the bill remains.

Opponents of the measure argued that the Republican-backed bill was designed to make it harder for Mainers to vote, while supporters claimed it was necessary to prevent voter fraud. The issue came to wider national attention Maine was flooded with outside cash days before the election.

This whole voter fraud issue is just a red herring put out by the rovepublicans to keep as many people from voting as they possibly can. The poor, the homeless, the elderly, the disabled, almost always seem to be democrats, and you know just how much the rovepublicans hate democracy and democrats. They want to turn this country into another Nicaragua or Haiti. The number of voter fraud cases in the whole United States would not be enough to change anything at all.

Oh yeah, according to the Repugs/Teabags, everybody but the filthy rich are liars, cheats and frauds! Voter fraud, welfare fraud, food stamp fraud, Medicare fraud, disability fraud - you name it! Us peons in the 99% are just trying to steal from the government! But why the frack should they care, they haven't paid into the government anyway, it's OUR money, unless you count what they spend buying politicians and running LYING, FRAUDULENT campaigns to support their agendas. You go Maine! You can bet the farm that if Republicans are pouring money into anything it only benefits the 1%!

Congratulation Maine. Good job. Maybe the tea party will get the message that Democrats also have a right to vote. Democracy is not just for Republicans. We know that you tea baggers think that every vote should go your way, but it just doesn't work that way. Get it?

We've had a law in Maine that worked just fine on same day voter registration. Now if we could just get the rest of the country to follow suit we might make some progress.
The other one that I loved that got defeated was the two casinos that an out of state company was trying to bring in. Sorry guys, but from what I've observed the people who gamble don't have enough to begin with. Two more of them in the state would have been disastrous. We don't plan on becoming another Las Vegas, thank you very much.

Good going people of Maine-including some of my cousins and their families. Voting Day registration went on there for 38 years without a problem of voter fraud. Yesterday the voters of Maine proved THEY,not the Tea Parties, are the real freedom fighters.

More good news. Congratulations, Maine. Lets all hope things are turning around and that we get rid of the do-nothings in the Congress.
