In an effort to reach out to voters in Minnesota ahead of a 2012 ballot on a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, the Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) recently launched a video campaign called “A Family is About Love” urging viewers to see that no matter the make-up of the family love is a common bond.
One video for the campaign features Mark and David, a same-sex couple who have enjoyed a 28-year relationship together. Mark and David cannot marry due to Minnesota’s existing statutory ban on same-sex marriage. Codifying this discrimination would greatly narrow the chances of them being able to marry in the foreseeable future. The campaign successfully puts a face to those people who will be affected by the constitutional amendment.
A recent poll by Public Policy Polling found Minnesotans are nearly evenly divided on the amendment with 46% of people favoring the amendment while 47% opposed with 7% remain undecided. Similarly, 45% of people said that gay marriage should be illegal while 46% said it should be legal, 9% remain undecided. Read more on that here.
